Ohio Wesleyan 5, John Carroll 2 (4/2/2002) Senior outfielder Shaun Rice (Dublin/Columbus Watterson) blasted a leadoff homer in the first inning to start the Bishops on the way to a non-conference win over John Carroll on Tuesday at Littick Field. The game was called after 7 1/2 innings because of rain and darkness. After Rice's blast, the Bishops added another first-inning run on a triple by junior outfielder Joe Loudenslager (Hilliard/Darby) and a passed ball. Sophomore second baseman Mike Albert (Shelby) drove in 2 runs in the second when his drive into right center went off the glove of a diving Brad Piroli, scoring senior third baseman Matt Fortuna (Strongsville/St. Edward) and junior shortstop Joe Deck (Waverly). John Carroll got on the board in the third when Zach Ellis singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a ground out and scored on another ground out. The Blue Streaks closed to within 4-2 in the sixth when Mike Kiene was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a Charles Hendricks single and scored on a passed ball. The Bishops got that run back in the bottom of the inning when junior outfielder Travis Falk (Bryan) reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on a Rice single. Rice finished with 3 hits and 2 RBI to highlight the Bishop offense. Junior righthander Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) worked the first 5-plus innings, scattering 4 hits and allowing both Blue Streak runs. Senior lefthander Matt Farmwald (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) followed with 2.0 hitless innings of relief and sophomore righthander Andy Busch (Westerville/South) finished with a hitless eighth for his first save of the season.
