Ohio Wesleyan 13, Earlham 3
Ohio Wesleyan 12, Earlham 2 (4/20/2002)

Senior first baseman Drew Caravella (Columbus/Hilliard Davidson) set a pair of Ohio Wesleyan career records in the opener and senior outfielder Shaun Rice (Dublin/Columbus Watterson) slammed 2 homers in the nightcap as Ohio Wesleyan swept Earlham in a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Saturday at Littick Field.

In the opener, Earlham jumped to a 2-0 first-inning lead off senior lefthander Matt Farmwald (Plain City/Jonathan Alder). Steve Pearson reached on an error by junior shortstop Joe Deck (Waverly) and scored on a 2-out double by Sean O'Reilley. O'Reilley took third on a single by Allan Campbell and scored when sophomore second baseman Mike Albert (Shelby) mishandled the throw back to the infield.

Junior catcher Bo Burnett (Powell/Olentangy) hit a solo homer in the second to bring the Bishops back to within 2-1.

Caravella then led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer to tie the score at 2-2. The homer was his 48th at Ohio Wesleyan, breaking the school and North Coast Athletic Conference record of 47 set by Jason Bogenrife from 1998-2001. The run he scored was his 184th, breaking the school record of 183 set by Scott Walberry from 1985-88.

But the Bishops weren't done. Burnett followed with a walk, stole second and took third when Earlham catcher Curt Courtad's throw sailed into centerfield. Junior shortstop Seth Tenpenny plated the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly. Deck followed with an infield single and stole second, then scored on an RBI single by junior outfielder Travis Falk (Bryan). Rice and junior outfielder Joe Loudenslager (Hilliard/Darby) followed with back-to-back doubles for a 6-2 Bishop lead.

Deck singled in a run and Loudenslager lined a 2-run single during a 3-run fifth and Deck and Caravella each had RBI doubles to highlight a 4-run sixth.

Deck led the Bishop offense by going 4-for-4 with 3 RBI. Loudenslager also drove in 3 runs and Caravella drove in 2 runs.

Farmwald went the distance on the mound, scattering 9 hits, striking out 2 and walking 2. Lucas Troutwine took the loss for Earlham.

As in the first game, the Quakers jumped to a quick lead in first inning of the nightcap when senior righthander Curt Moenter (Delphos/St. John) plunked Quaker designated hitter Zach Durban with a pitch with the bases loaded.

Ohio Wesleyan tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Rice walked, moved to third on David Luptak's errant pickoff throw and scored on a sacrifice fly by Loudenslager.

Falk singled in junior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) in the second to put the Bishops ahead to stay, then Loudenslager followed with a 3-run homer later in the inning. Sophomore third baseman Tyler Mott (Grove City) and Rice slammed solo homers to highlight a 3-run third inning and Ohio Wesleyan put the game out of reach with 4 runs in the fifth, with Rice's second solo homer of the game and a 2-run double by Caravella the key blows.

Rice went 3-for-3 with 4 runs scored and 3 RBI, while Caravella also went 3-for-3 and drove in 2 runs. Loudenslager was 2-for-3 with 4 RBI and Schultheis also contributed 2 hits.

Moenter fanned 8 and walked 3 in going the distance on the mound. Luptak took the loss for Earlham.
