Ohio Wesleyan 7, Earlham 0 (4/21/2002)

Senior first baseman Drew Caravella (Columbus/Hilliard Davidson) drove in 3 runs and sophomore lefthander Michael Myers (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) hurled a 5-hit shutout to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Earlham in North Coast Athletic Conference West Division action on Sunday at Littick Field.

Ohio Wesleyan jumped to a quick 4-0 lead. Senior outfielder Shaun Rice (Dublin/Columbus Watterson) led off the bottom of the first with a double and scored on a single by junior outfielder Joe Loudenslager (Hilliard/Darby). Loudenslager took second on the throw to the plate and moved to third on a bunt single by sophomore second baseman Mike Albert (Shelby). After Albert stole second, Caravella lashed a double down the rightfield line to score both runners. Caravella moved to third on a fly ball and scored on a ground out by sophomore third baseman Tyler Mott (Grove City) to finish the 4-run outburst.

The Bishops added 2 runs in the fifth on sacrifice flies by senior outfielder Michael Hershberger (Massillon/Canton Central Catholic) and Albert and one more in the seventh when Hershberger walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a ground out and scored on Caravella's single down the rightfield line.

Myers retired the first 9 batters he faced but hit Steve Pearson with a pitch to lead off the fourth inning. Pearson was erased on a double play grounder by Michael Faile, which ended up preserving the shutout when Kevin Carr followed with a triple down the rightfield line. Earlham also got a runner to third in the ninth when Carr reached second on a throwing error by Albert with 1 out and moved to third on a ground out, but Myers fanned Curt Courtad to end the game.

Rice, Caravella, and Mott each went 2-for-4, with Rice scoring twice and Caravella driving in 3 runs. Junior outfielder Travis Falk (Bryan) was 2-for-3 in the game.

Myers struck out 5 and walked 2. Jeremy Carpenter went the distance for Earlham, allowing 11 hits, striking out 1 and walking 1.
