Ohio Wesleyan 6, Wooster 1 (5/18/2002) Senior righthander Curt Moenter (Delphos/St. John) fired a complete-game 5-hitter as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Wooster in Game 4 of the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional on Saturday in Marietta. Ohio Wesleyan will face Manchester in the loser's bracket final at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at Marietta. Moenter retired the first 8 Wooster batters before Luke Ullman launched a flare down the rightfield line for a single. Jared Treadway then beat out a grounder up the middle that junior second baseman Matt Fortuna (Strongsville/St. Edward) gloved but had no play on, but Moenter bounced back to retire Matt Miller to end the inning. The Bishops had staked Moenter to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Senior outfielder Shaun Rice (Dublin/Columbus Watterson) walked and junior outfielder Joe Loudenslager (Hilliard/Darby) singled, and the runners moved up on a throwing error by Wooster catcher George Radigan. Sophomore designated hitter Tyler Mott (Grove City) struck out for the first out, but senior first baseman Drew Caravella (Columbus/Hilliard Davidson) singled in Rice to put the Bishops on the scoreboard. Junior catcher Bo Burnett (Powell/Olentangy) flied out to left for the second out, but junior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) followed with a walk and junior third baseman Mark Wherry (Dublin/Scioto) delivered a single to score Loudenslager and Caravella. Junior shortstop Joe Deck then grounded to Wooster shortstop Ullman, who was charged with 2 errors when he mishandled the ball, allowing Deck to reach base, and then threw wildly to second, allowing Schultheis to score. Loudenslager launched a solo home run in the second to make the score 5-0. Wooster scratched out a run in the top of the sixth when Ullman reached on Wherry's fielding error, moved to third on a throwing error by Fortuna and scored on Bill Daugherty's single to center. Ohio Wesleyan got the run back in the bottom of the sixth on Caravella's RBI single. Moenter retired the Fighting Scots in order in the seventh and the eighth before allowing 2 hits in the ninth. But the Bishop senior fanned Brian Stevens and got Radigan to pop up to end the game. Moenter finished with 13 strikeouts and did not walk a batter. Loudenslager went 3-for-4 for Ohio Wesleyan, with 2 runs scored. Caravella was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and Wherry also drove in 2 runs. John Werner was charged with the loss for Wooster. Back
