Ohio Wesleyan 27, Waynesburg 0 (9/15/2001)

Sophomore halfback Chad Smith (Prospect/Elgin) scored 2 touchdowns and senior tailback Matt Capone (Cleveland/Padua) ran for 184 yards as the Bishops blanked Waynesburg in non-conference play on Saturday in Waynesburg, Pa.

Smith carried 3 times during the Bishops' first scoring drive, including a 10-yard run that put Ohio Wesleyan on the scoreboard with 1:48 left in the first quarter.

Smith followed with a 1-yard run with 4:47 left in the third quarter, capping a 57-yard drive. Key plays in the march included an 11-yard burst by junior halfback Bernie Vendlinski (Brunswick/Highland) and a 36-yard strike from senior quarterback Mike Jonesco (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) to senior split end Joe Clinton (Farmington Hills, Mich./U. Detroit Jesuit) on a third-and-10 play from the Waynesburg 42.

Jonesco found senior split end Brian Cromwell (Toledo/DeSales) on a 17-yard scoring pass to make it 20-0 with 6:26 left in the game, finishing off an 80-yard drive that saw junior halfback Jason Osborne (Oak Harbor) rip off gains of 27 and 9 yards and Capone rumble for 28 yards.

Capone broke loose on a 63-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.

Senior cornerback Jason Martin (Columbus/Westerville North) preserved the shutout by picking off a Waynesburg pass at the Bishop 2-yard line as time ran out.

Capone led the Bishops with 184 yards in 18 carries, while Osborne followed with 71 yards in 8 rushes. Jonesco completed 10 of 21 passes for 143 yards, with Cromwell making 6 catches for 52 yards.

The Bishop defense allowed only 15 yards rushing. Standouts included junior linebacker Chad Marlatt (Coshocton/Ridgewood), who led the Bishops with 13 tackles, including 2 for loss and a sack; senior safety Matt Lavish (Bay Village/Bay), who made 9 stops, including 2 for loss and a sack, and broke up 4 passes; sophomore linebacker Billy Chrisovergis (Dayton/Bellbrook), who had 8 tackles, including 2 sacks; senior cornerback Jason Martin (Columbus/Westerville North), who made 6 tackles, intercepted a pass and broke up 3 other passes; and senior tackle Jamie Vanek (Parma), who had 2 sacks and 3 tackles for loss among his 5 tackles.
