Ohio Wesleyan 50, Elmhurst 16 (9/22/2001)

Finding itself trailing for the first time this season, the Ohio Wesleyan football team answered with an outburst unparalleled in Bishop football history in defeating Elmhurst in non-conference action on Saturday in Elmhurst, Ill.

Sophomore halfback Chad Smith (Prospect/Elgin) and senior tailback Matt Capone (Cleveland/Padua) each ran for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns to spearhead the Bishop offense.

Ohio Wesleyan piled up 561 rushing yards, breaking not only the school record of 513 set against Otterbein in 1952 but the North Coast Athletic Conference mark of 535 set by Wittenberg against Kenyon in 1990. Ohio Wesleyan also piled up a school-record 727 yards in total offense, shattering the school standard of 719 set against Oberlin in 1967. The Bishops' 37 first downs also set school and conference records.

Trailing, 16-6, after a pair of Chris Dembosz touchdown runs in the first quarter -- the latter covering 77 yards -- Ohio Wesleyan came back in the second quarter with scores by Smith, Capone and freshman halfback Eric Indiciani (Delaware/Olentangy). All 3 Bishop players would crack the 100-yard mark on the day, with Smith collecting 175 yards on 23 carries, Capone 175 yards on 22 attempts and Indiciani 116 yards on 14 carries. It was Ohio Wesleyan's first 100-yard trifecta since 1993, when Pryestt Strickland (125), Jimmy Clark (115) and Damon Cody (100) did it against Wittenberg.

Senior quarterback Mike Jonesco (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) found senior split end Joe Clinton (Farmington Hills, Mich./U. Detroit Jesuit) on an 11-yard touchdown pass to account for the third quarter scoring.

Capone and senior halfback Jonas Nash (New Orleans, La./Clark) scored fourth-quarter touchdowns. The Bishop defense also got into the act, posting a safety.

Jonesco completed 11 of 21 passes for 166 yards, with senior split end Brian Cromwell (Toledo/DeSales) making a team-high 4 catches for 89 yards.

Defensive standouts included sophomore linebacker Billy Chrisovergis (Dayton/Bellbrook), who led the Bishops with 12 tackles, including a sack and another for loss; junior cornerback Steve Siefert (Sylvania/Northview), who made 11 tackles; junior linebacker Chad Marlatt (Coshocton/Ridgewood), who recorded 10 stops; and sophomore end Corey Krieger (Oak Harbor), whose 5 tackles included a sack and another for loss.
