Ohio Wesleyan 58, Kenyon 14 (10/27/2001) Junior halfback Jason Osborne (Oak Harbor) and sophomore halfback Chad Smith (Prospect/Elgin) had touchdown runs and senior tackle Steve Schoenberger (West Carrollton) scored on a 49-yard fumble return as Ohio Wesleyan jumped to a 21-0 first-quarter lead and went on to top Kenyon in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Selby Field. Ohio Wesleyan wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard, putting together a 5-play, 45-yard drive on its first possession. Senior tailback Matt Capone (Cleveland/Padua) carried 3 times for 30 yards, Smith had a carry for 9 yards and Osborne swept around right end for 16 yards and the touchdown. Schoenberger made it 14-0 midway through the period, picking up a fumble by Kenyon running back Tim Clayton and rumbling down the left sideline for a score. Senior quarterback Mike Jonesco (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) set up the third score by firing back-to-back 27-yard completions to senior split end Brian Cromwell (Toledo/DeSales) and senior split end Joe Clinton (Farmington Hills, Mich./U. Detroit Jesuit). Smith went over from 9 yards out for the touchdown. Clinton hauled in a pass from sophomore quarterback Jeff Hanna (Wadsworth) early in the second quarter to make the score 28-0. Kenyon came back with a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Tony Miga. The first covered 3 yards to receiver Milan Perazich with 4:37 left in the first half, and the second was a 10-yard strike to Neil Hall in the corner of the end zone with :39 left in the half. But the Bishops seized momentum right back, with Jonesco connecting with Capone for 36 yards on a fourth-and-10 play from the Bishop 49-yard line, setting up a 32-yard field goal by senior Brian Leach (Xenia) as the clock expired. The Bishop defense took over from there, holding the Lords to 3 first downs in the second half. Capone scored on third-quarter runs of 7 and 1 yard and Ohio Wesleyan got a pair of long touchdown runs in the fourth quarter. Freshman halfback Nathanael Jonhenry (Berea) scored on a 42-yard burst and junior tailback Jimmy Kinch (Painesville/Riverside) broke loose on an 80-yard gallop that wrapped up the scoring. Capone led the Bishops with 112 yards in 19 carries and caught 2 passes for 45 yards. Kinch finished with 99 yards in 6 carries, Osborne had 89 yards in 10 attempts and Smith finished with 88 yards in 10 carries. Jonesco completed 5 of 13 passes for 114 yards and Hanna was 2-for-2 for 60 yards. Clayton led Kenyon with 63 yards in 28 attempts. Miga was 13-for-34 for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns. Perazich had 7 catches for 104 yards for the Lords. Defensive standouts included sophomore linebacker Billy Chrisovergis (Dayton/Bellbrook), who led the Bishops with 7 stops, including 1½ sacks; Schoenberger, who made 5 tackles, including a sack; sophomore linebacker Kent Weakley (Plain City/Dublin Scioto), who made 6 tackles, including half a sack; junior linebacker Chad Marlatt (Coshocton/Ridgewood), whose 6 tackles included 1 for loss; and senior tackle Jamie Vanek (Parma), who had 4 stops, including 1½ sacks and another for loss.
