Earlham 60, Ohio Wesleyan 57 (2/16/2002)

Sophomore guard Jeff Huber (Lakewood/St. Edward) and junior guard Jason Dopoulos (Strongsville) scored baskets in the final :20 of regulation, but a frantic rally came up just short and Earlham held on to nip Ohio Wesleyan in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday in Richmond, Ind.

With the Bishops trailing, 59-52, with :25 left in regulation time, freshman forward Brandon Cole (Sidney) missed a 3-pointer but sophomore center Travis Schwab (Medina) got the rebound and got the ball to Huber, who scored with :12 to play.

Huber then stole the ball back from the Quakers and got the ball to Dopoulos, who drilled a 3-pointer with :07 remaining to bring the Bishops back to within 59-57.

The Bishops immediately fouled Nathan Stoops, who made the first free throw but missed the second. Cole cleared the rebound and the Bishops worked the ball to Dopoulos, but his potential game-tying 3-pointer was off the mark.

Ohio Wesleyan led by as many as 7 points during the first half, but Earlham closed the gap to 25-23 at halftime and took the lead on Stoops' 3-pointer :24 into the second half. The Quakers built the lead up to 9 points and still led by a margin of 51-44 with 4:04 remaining.

Schwab hit 2 lay-ins and converted a 3-point play to fuel a Bishop comeback, bringing Ohio Wesleyan within 53-51 with 1:44 remaining, but the Quakers padded the lead to 56-51 on Jason Smith's 3-pointer with 1:13 left and then hit enough free throws to hold the Bishops at bay.

Schwab led the Bishops with 24 points, while Huber finished with 10 points. Cole grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds and shared the team lead with 3 assists.

Ricky Jones led the Quakers with 13 points, Smith had 11 points and Brady Keaton scored 10 points for Earlham.
