Ohio Wesleyan 84, Rhodes 77 (11/24/2001)

Junior guard Jason Dopoulos (Strongsville) hit a jumper to break a 72-72 tie and put the Bishops ahead to stay and Ohio Wesleyan went on to top Rhodes in the second round of the Rhodes College Classic on Saturday in Memphis, Tenn.

Maryville (Mo.) defeated Hendrix (Ark.), 92-83, in the other second-round game.

Dopoulos and sophomore guard Shawn Kindred (Delaware/Hayes) drilled 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan wiped out a 3-0 deficit and took a 6-3 lead in the first 1:04 of play.

The Bishops kept up the torrid shooting, streaking to an 18-6 lead over the next 5 minutes as Dopoulos hit 2 more 3-pointers and sophomore center Travis Schwab (Medina) added 4 points.

Rhodes still trailed, 61-49, with 11:16 left in the game when the Lynx went on a run of their own. Bryan Baird sunk a pair of 3-pointers and Carl Yoder chipped in 5 points at Rhodes came to within 66-65 with 7:21 remaining. The Lynx eventually tied the game at 72-72, setting up Dopoulos' shooting.

Dopoulos' tie-breaking basket started off a 12-0 run that also included a 3-point play by freshman forward Brandon Cole (Sidney), 5 points from Kindred and a lay-tin by Dopoulos.

Dopoulos led the Bishops with 22 points, while Kindred and Schwab each finished with 20 points. Cole led the Bishops with 8 rebounds and Kindred had a team-leading 3 assists.

Stephen Russell led Rhodes with 19 points.
