John Carroll 2, Ohio Wesleyan 1 (9/1/2001) Chris Heslep scored with 2:40 left in the first overtime to lift John Carroll to a 2-1 win over Ohio Wesleyan in the championship game of the Fred Myers Invitational on Saturday at Roy Rike Field. Allegheny defeated Calvin, 2-0, in the third-place game as Patrick Redman scored from in close midway through the first half and Pieter Ockers converted a penalty kick midway through the second half. John Carroll got on the scoreboard first when Dustin Stelmak knocked in a loose ball after a corner kick. Justin LaBelle's corner kick from the right side sailed across the box, bounced and was tracked down by Stelmak, who nudged it into the goal. Ohio Wesleyan evened the game with 3:04 left in regulation time. Sophomore forward Chris Jack (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) advanced the ball up the left side and his centering pass was tapped in by sophomore forward Paul Smith (Dublin/Columbus Watterson) near the right post. Sophomore Adam Roberts (Worthington/Wellington) made 2 saves in the first half and classmate Joe Anstine (Westerville/South) had 4 saves in the second half and overtime. John Carroll's Phil Mansell recorded 6 saves. Ohio Wesleyan outshot John Carroll, 19-12. Heslep received the Dick Gauthier Award as the Fred Myers Invitational Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by John Carroll teammates T.J. Kolba, Keegan Schoen and Kevin Pitorak; Ohio Wesleyan senior midfielder Ryan Miller (Delaware/Hayes), senior back Philip Hoffman (Kettering/Alter) and senior back Brad Cain (Gahanna/Westerville North); Allegheny's Kyle Henry, Patrick Redman and Pieter Ockers and Calvin's Joel Vande Kopple and Sam DeYoung.
