Freshman first baseman Leah Schilling (Hudson) rifled a double down the leftfield line to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh and give the Bishops a win in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader against Ohio Northern on Tuesday at Mingo Park.

Ohio Northern had taken a win in the opener as Amber Bishop drove in 4 runs.

The Polar Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap when Becky Lee reached on an error by junior first baseman Nichole Rubeck (Raymond/North Union), moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on Juli White's single to center.

Ohio Wesleyan came back with 6 runs in the third, with sophomore catcher Jessie Blanton (Marion/Harding) stroking an RBI double, freshman righthander Janelle Thompson (Delaware/Hayes) driving in a run with an infield grounder, senior shortstop Kim Dubovec (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) following with an RBI double, sophomore outfielder Sandra Mowery (Euclid) delivering a 2-run single and junior second baseman Carrie Neff (Hudson) capping the inning with an RBI single.

The Bishops tacked on 2 more runs with 2 out in the fourth as junior outfielder Tammy Blair (Radnor/Buckeye Valley) and Blanton singled before Dubovec sent both home with a double.

Ohio Northern answered with 6 runs in the top of the fifth, with Valerie Bendoff's 2-run single and Amanda Kalal's bases-loaded double the key hits.

The Polar Bears tied the game at 8-8 in the top of the sixth on an unusual play. With 2 out, Sarah Wollf doubled to right. Becky Lee followed with a grounder that got by Bishop third baseman Angie Cannon (Walbridge/Lake) for an error. Lee made the turn at first and went for second, but Mowery picked up the ball in leftfield and gunned it to Neff, who made the tag on Lee but dropped the ball. Neff picked up the ball and fired to sophomore outfielder Tiffany Soggs (North Royalton) covering at second for the out on Lee, but not before Wollf scored the tying run.

The score held until the seventh, when Dubovec lined a one-out single to right and scored on Schilling's double down the line that eluded a diving Laura Randolph.

Thompson went the distance for the win, striking out 4 and walking 2. Marie Mascari, the second Ohio Northern pitcher, was charged with the loss.

In the opener, Ohio Northern took the lead with 4 runs in the second and didn't look back. Danielle Swigart and Juli White singled in runs and Bishop capped the inning with a 2-run single to right center.

The Polar Bears padded the lead to 5-0 in the fourth on Bishop's RBI ground out and added 2 more in the sixth on Amanda Gier's RBI single and Bishop's run-scoring double.

Ohio Wesleyan got on the scoreboard with 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth. Schilling opened the inning with a pinch-hit single and Soggs followed with a walk. After Blair's infield fly, the runners moved up on a wild pitch and Blanton was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Thompson then singled up the middle to plate both Bishop runs.

Junior righthander Emily Thornton (Columbus/Watterson) went the distance for Ohio Wesleyan, allowing 7 hits, striking out 4 and walking 2.

Erin Rupp picked up the win for Ohio Northern with 5.0 innings of 2-hit, shutout work. Angela Inninger worked the final 2.0 innings for the Polar Bears.
