Ohio Wesleyan 83, Earlham 72 (1/19/2002)

Senior guard Michelle Wolfe (Gahanna/Lincoln) scored 5 points and freshman wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) added 4 points during an 11-2 that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay in a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Earlham on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Wolfe hit a lay-in to break a 4-4 tie and put the Bishops ahead to stay, and Heil followed with a pair of free throws. Junior post Mindy Hammond (Columbus/DeSales) drove the left baseline for another score and Heil followed with a steal and lay-in before Wolfe capped the run with a 3-pointer from the right side.

The Bishops built the lead further with a 10-0 spurt later in the half. That run was finished off by a 3-point play by Kelly Heil that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 32-14 lead with 7:13 left in the period.

Earlham came back in the closing minutes of the half, getting a pair of baskets from Rae-Rae Washington to make the halftime score 40-29, then scoring the first 7 points of the second half to close within 40-36.

But Kelly Heil answered with a 3-point play to end that run, and added another 3-point play and a rebound basket in the next 3 minutes of action as the Bishops built the lead to 50-42. Earlham fought back once more, with Michelle Behler and Kim Patton sinking jumpers to make it 50-46, but the Bishops opened it up with a 9-3 run that featured 7 points by sophomore post Tiffany Barbee (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical). Earlham would not come closer than 6 points after that.

Kelly Heil led the Bishops with 26 points, while Barbee finished with 16 points, Hammond had 15 points and shared the team lead with 6 rebounds and junior post Jennifer Heil (Sylvania/Southview) contributed 14 points and shared the team lead with 6 rebounds. Senior guard Talia Brader (Westerville/Columbus DeSales) led the Bishops with 4 assists.

Summer Cress led Earlham with 21 points and 5 rebounds, Lindsey Chappell finished with 19 points and 5 rebounds and Behler and Patton each scored 14 points.
