Ohio Wesleyan 86, Hiram 48 (1/29/2002) Junior post Mindy Hammond (Columbus/DeSales) scored 7 points during an early 9-0 run that gave the Bishops breathing room and senior post Katy Sturtz (Worthington/Columbus Watterson) took over in the second half as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Hiram in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena. Ohio Wesleyan led, 4-3, nearly 4 minutes into the game when Hammond started the first run with a 3-point play. She followed with a pair of lay-ins sandwiched around a fast break bucket by freshman wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) as the Bishops reeled off 9 points in a span of just over a minute and a half to pad the lead to 13-3. Heil followed with a pair of lay-ins to highlight the Bishop offense as Ohio Wesleyan extended the lead to 22-7 with 8:58 left in the half. Hiram clawed its way back into the game with some tough defense and scores from 5 different players. The Terriers assembled an 11-2 spree that made the score 24-18 with 5:41 left in the half. But Hammond followed with a pair of free throws and a lay-in and senior wing Michelle Wolfe (Gahanna/Lincoln) added a fast break bucket during an 8-0 Bishop run. Ohio Wesleyan took a 36-22 halftime lead on a putback basket by Heil in the closing seconds, and then Sturtz took over. Sturtz scored twice in the first 30 seconds of the second half and later had 8 points during a 13-0 Bishop spurt that put the game away. Sturtz led the Bishops with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists, matching her career high in the latter. Heil finished with 20 points and 5 assists and Hammond had a perfect shooting night, going 7-for-7 from the field and 5-for-5 from the line to finish with 19 points. Terra Roane and Audra Byler led Hiram with 10 points apiece. Back
