Ohio Wesleyan 15, Muskingum 9

Junior third baseman Brad Whitman (Canfield) lined a 2-run single and junior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) belted a 3-run homer to highlight an 8-run sixth inning that broke open a non-conference win over Muskingum in the Bishops' home opener on Tuesday at Littick Field.

Muskingum had taken a 3-0 lead in the second when Nate Prati led off with a single and Todd Hoffert and Mike VanSchepen hit back-to-back home runs.

Ohio Wesleyan tied the game in the third, scoring one run on a wild pitch before senior first baseman Bo Burnett (Powell/Olentangy) and sophomore catcher Paul Suhar (Canfield) added RBI singles, but Muskingum re-took the lead in the fourth on Ronald Keener's RBI ground out.

The Bishops went ahead to stay with 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore outfielder Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton), senior shortstop Joe Deck (Waverly) and freshman outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) opened the inning with singles, but Strasburg was tagged out trying to get back to third after rounding the bag on Toney's hit. Junior outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby) followed with an RBI double and senior second baseman Seth Tenpenny (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) plated a run with a ground out before Whitman capped the rally with a run-scoring single to right.

Muskingum closed to within 6-5 on Adam Hesler's solo homer in the sixth, but Ohio Wesleyan broke the game open in the bottom of the inning.

After Whitman's 2-run single and Schultheis' 3-run homer, Deck, Toney and Tenpenny each drove in a run in the frame.

The Muskies added single runs in the seventh and eighth and 2 more in the ninth.

Freshman righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) went the distance on the mound for the Bishops. He struck out 7 and walked 4. Matt Hatfield was the starter and loser for Muskingum.
