Junior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson), senior designated hitter Bo Burnett (Powell/Olentangy) and sophomore outfielder Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) clubbed home runs to help the Bishops defeat Denison in the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Sunday at Littick Field.

In the opener, Denison's Brian Regan put the Big Red ahead with a sixth-inning home run and Denison added 3 insurance runs in the seventh to take a win.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener, with Burnett driving an RBI single and junior first baseman Tyler Mott (Grove City) driving in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Denison cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second on a single, a double and a Bishop error, but Ohio Wesleyan got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a single by senior third baseman Mark Wherry (Dublin/Scioto), a sacrifice by senior shortstop Joe Deck (Waverly), a Denison error and a run-scoring single by senior outfielder Travis Falk (Bryan).

After that, junior lefthander Mike Grady (North Canton/Hoover) and Denison's Adam Chonko settled down into a pitchers' duel. Grady worked out of jams in the fourth and fifth innings, stranding 3 Big Red runners in the fifth, while Chonko allowed only one baserunner in the third through sixth innings.

Denison took the lead in the sixth when Alex Nikolich led off with a single and took second on a sacrifice by Cam Cowden. Pinch hitter Matt Fadely followed with a double to the gap in rightcenter, scoring Nikolich, and Regan followed with a 2-run homer to give the Big Red a 4-3 lead.

The Big Red added runs in the seventh on Nikolich's RBI double and a squeeze bunt by Jake Hummel.

Grady was charged with the loss. He allowed 10 hits and 5 runs in 6-plus innings, striking out 2 and walking 2.

Chonko picked up the win, holding Ohio Wesleyan to 4 hits over the first 6.0 innings.

In the nightcap, it was Denison that jumped to the early lead and Ohio Wesleyan that came back with the aid of the long ball.

The Big Red took a 2-0 lead in the third on Regan's RBI ground out and Tripp Dudley's RBI single, but Ohio Wesleyan got one back in the bottom of the inning as junior outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby) singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Burnett's sacrifice fly.

Denison answered with 2 runs in the top of the fourth, with one scoring on a wild pitch and one scoring on a Bishop fielding error.

Ohio Wesleyan went ahead to stay in the bottom of the inning. Schultheis led off with a majestic home run to left center, and consecutive walks to junior second baseman Brad Whitman (Canfield), Wherry and Deck loaded the bases and spelled the end of the day for Denison starter Harry Shillingford. Dallas Puskar came on and gave up a 2-run single to Falk. Albert's bunt single re-loaded the bases and Mott drew a walk to put the Bishops ahead, 5-4. Falk then scored on Burnett's RBI ground out.

The Bishops put the game away with 7 runs in the fifth inning. Falk lined an RBI double to right center, Mott drilled a bases-loaded triple into the gap in right center, senior outfielder Joe Loudenslager (Hilliard/Darby) followed with a run-scoring double and Burnett blasted a 2-run homer.

Strasburg wrapped up the Bishop scoring with a pinch-hit, 2-run homer in the sixth inning.

Junior righthander Byron Lowe (Medford, Mass./Cambridge Ridge) picked up the win in relief. Lowe worked the final 3.2 innings and allowed 1 hit while striking out 2 and walking none.

Shillingford was charged with the loss.
