Wesleyan 11, Wabash 2
Wabash 5, Ohio Wesleyan 1
April
5, 2003
Junior
righthander Tyler Mott (Grove City) pitched a complete-game win and helped
his own cause with a 3-run homer as the Bishops defeated Wabash in the
opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader
on Saturday at Crawfordsville, Ind.
In the nightcap, Wabash erupted for 4 runs in the bottom of the sixth
inning to break a 1-1 tie and salvage a split of the twinbill.
Wabash took an early lead in the opener, plating a run on a 2-out double
by Jake Martin and a single by Bill Goff.
Ohio Wesleyan answered with 7 runs in the top of the second. The Bishops
loaded the bases with nobody out and senior shortstop Joe Deck (Waverly)
singled in the tying run. Senior outfielder Travis Falk (Bryan) and junior outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby) followed with walks to plate 2 more runs.
After Mott forced Deck at home plate, senior outfielder Joe Loudenslager
(Hilliard/Darby) reached on an error, with Falk scoring on the play. One
out later, junior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) ripped
a single down the leftfield line for 2 runs and senior third baseman Mark
Wherry (Dublin/Scioto) delived a run-scoring single to cap the 7-run outburst.
Mott cracked a 3-run homer in the third, scoring Falk and Albert.
Mott scattered 8 hits in pitching the complete game. He struck out 3 and
walked 1.
Jon Horne was the starting and losing pitcher for Wabash.
The nightcap featured a pitchers' duel between freshman righthander Michael
Krieger (Boardman) and Wabash's Goff. Krieger held the Little Giants hitless
into the fifth inning.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 1-0 lead in third when Falk singled, moved to
second on a sacrifice by freshman outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland),
took third on a wild pitch and scored on Loudenslager's single to left.
The Bishops would load the bases with 1 out on a walk to Mott and a single
by senior
first baseman Bo Burnett (Powell/Olentangy), but Goff worked out of the
jam.
Wabash finally touched Krieger for a hit in the fifth when Jared Bogan
stroked a leadoff single to centerfield. After Danny Schubert was hit
by a pitch, pinch runner Bob Lewis moved to third on Mike Mack's fly ball
to right and the tying run scored on Chris Sides' fielder's choice groundout.
Jared Martin singled and Tyler Nance followed with a single to rightfield,
but Loudenslager gunned down Sides at the plate to preserve the 1-1 tie.
The Bishops threatened in the sixth when Burnett led off with a single
and moved to second on a Schultheis sacrifice. Junior second baseman Brad
Whitman (Canfield) doubled down the rightfield line, with Burnett holding
at third, then Wherry bounced a grounder to shortstop, with Burnett thrown
out at the plate and Whitman tagged out trying for third on the play.
The Little Giants broke the tie in the sixth when Nick George, Jake Martin
and Goff opened the inning with consecutive singles. Krieger battled back
to get Nick Rico to line into a double play, but Schubert reached on an
infield single to load the bases for Mike Mack, who delivered a 2-run
double. Sides added a run-scoring double later in the inning to account
for the 5-1 final.
Krieger worked the complete game, allowing 9 hits and striking out 1 and
walking 1. Goff scattered 7 hits for Wabash, striking out 4 and walking
1.
