Wabash 4, Ohio Wesleyan 3
Ohio Wesleyan 8, Wabash 4

April 6, 2003

Junior righthander Tyler Mott (Grove City) belted an RBI double to highlight a 3-run first inning that started the Bishops on the way to a win over Wabash in the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Sunday at Crawfordsville, Ind.

In the opener, Wabash's Chris Sides delivered a 2-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Little Giants over the Bishops.

With one out in the top of the first inning in the nightcap, senior outfielder Joe Loudenslager (Hilliard/Darby) singled and took second on a wild pitch. Junior second baseman Brad Whitman (Canfield) followed with a walk before Mott ripped a double to left center, scoring Loudenslager. Whitman later scored on a wild pitch and Mott scored on a single by junior outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby) to give the Bishops a 3-0 lead.

Wabash came back with 2 runs in the second on Sides' RBI double and a run-scoring fielder's choice by Tyler Nance, but the Bishops responded with 3 runs in the fourth inning.

Junior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) led off with a single. One out later, senior shortstop Joe Deck (Waverly) singled, sending Schultheis to third. Senior shortstop Seth Tenpenny (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) then plated Schultheis with a sacrifice fly. Freshman third baseman Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) singled and senior outfielder Travis Falk (Bryan) followed with a single that scored Deck, with Williams scoring from first on the throw.

Loudenslager added an RBI single during a 2-run sixth that hiked the Bishop lead to 8-2.

Wabash plated single runs in the sixth and seventh, but freshman righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) came on in the seventh and retired 3 straight batters to record his first collegiate save.

Junior righthander Byron Lowe (
Medford, MA/Cambridge Ridge), who was making his first collegiate start, worked the first 4-plus innings to pick up the win. Freshman righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian) worked the fifth and sixth innings.

In the opener, Wabash broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when Nick George walked, moved to second on a ground out and scored on Jared Bogan's single to left center.

The Bishops came right back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Mott reached on an error to lead off the inning. Schultheis followed with a single up the middle, sending Mott to third, and Deck delivered an RBI double to score Mott. One out later, Williams laced a single to score Schultheis.

Wabash re-took the lead in the bottom of the inning, bunching together 4 singles to put a pair of runs on the scoreboard.

The score stood at 3-2 going into the seventh inning, when Ohio Wesleyan scratched out a run to send the game into extra innings. Schultheis reached on an error by Little Giant shortstop Danny Schubert to open the inning, then stole second base. One out later, Tenpenny singled to left center, with Schultheis holding at third. Williams followed with a sacrifice fly to deliver the tying run.

Wabash pushed across the game-winner in the eighth. Jake Martin led off with a single, and one out later, Bogan singled to center and Schubert was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior righthander Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) induced Mike Mack to hit into a fielder's choice, with Martin forced out at the plate for the second out, but Sides followed with a single up the middle to score Bogan with the winning run.

Burchett worked the complete game for the Bishops, striking out 4 and walking 1. John Thiry was credited with the win in relief for Wabash.
