Thomas More 11, Ohio Wesleyan 8

April 8, 2003

Junior first baseman Tyler Mott (Grove City) drove in runs in the first and third innings to give the Bishops leads, but Thomas More scored 5 runs in the fifth to take the lead for good and went on to defeat Ohio Wesleyan in non-conference play on Tuesday at Littick Field.

Thomas More took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Scott Vetter led off with a single, stole second, took third on a ground out and scored on a single by Doug Vetter.

The Bishops answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, senior shortstop Seth Tenpenny (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) reached on an error and moved to third on a double by senior outfielder Joe Loudenslager (Hilliard/Darby). Both runs scored on Mott's hit down the leftfield line, with Mott taking second on the throw home. Mott then scored on a single by sophomore catcher Paul Suhar (Canfield).

Thomas More closed to within 3-2 on Kyle Bucher's solo homer in the second and tied the game in the third as Brad Thoma singled and took second on an error by senior outfielder Travis Falk (Bryan). Doug Vetter followed with a single to right center to score the tying run.

The Bishops re-took the lead in the home half of the inning as Mott belted a 2-out
homer to left center, and added to the lead in the fourth when sophomore outfielder Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice by senior shortstop Joe Deck (Waverly) and scored on a single by junior outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby).

The Saints got 2-run homers from Fred Riess and Bucher to highlight their 5-run fifth and chase Bishop starter Mike Grady (North Canton/Hoover). Freshman righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian) came on and fanned Noah Welte to get out of the inning.

Thomas More added 2 runs in the sixth on 2 hits and a pair of Bishop errors, and the Saints tacked on an insurance run in the ninth on a 2-out single by Welte, a stolen base and a single by Scott Vetter.

Ohio Wesleyan chipped away at the Saint lead, but was not able to put together a big inning. The Bishops loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth, getting a run home on a ground out by j
unior second baseman Brad Whitman (Canfield), but Saint reliever Donny Capannari worked out of the jam.

In the seventh, Falk led off the frame by reaching second on an error on Saint rightfielder Nick Pieczonka, tagged up and moved to third on a fly ball by sophomore shortstop T.J. Conroy (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) and scored on Mott's fielder's choice grounder, but Capannari again worked out of the inning.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened again in the ninth when Falk and senior third baseman Mark Wherry (Dublin/Scioto) opened the inning with walks.

Matt Fritsch came in to pitch for Thomas More and Loudenslager greeted him with a grounder that forced Wherry at second base, but Mott followed with an RBI single to score Falk and cut the lead to 11-8. Fritsch then struck out junior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) and Strasburg to end the game.

Mott highlighted the Bishop offense by going 3-for-4 with 5 RBI.

Capannari was credited with the win. He pitched 3 innings, allowing 1 hit and 1 earned run. Fritsch was credited with a save.

Grady was charged with the loss for Ohio Wesleyan.
Dunn worked the last 4.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and striking out 5 while walking none.
