Wesleyan 7, Earlham 2
Ohio Wesleyan 7, Earlham 4
April
18, 2003
Senior
outfielder Joe Loudenslager (Hilliard/Darby) drove in the go-ahead run
in the seventh inning of the opener and plated the tying run in the nightcap
to help Ohio Wesleyan sweep a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division
doubleheader from Earlham on Friday at Richmond, Ind.
The Bishops wasted no time in taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning of
the opener. Junior
second baseman Brad Whitman (Canfield) was hit by a pitch to open the
game and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a walk to senior outfielder
Travis Falk (Bryan), Whitman advanced to third on Loudenslager's fly ball.
The 2 runners then pulled off a double steal, with Whitman scoring to
put the Bishops ahead.
Earlham countered with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out,
Josh Amyx was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Kevin Carr. One
out later, Sean O'Reilley
singled
and Carr moved to third and scored on an error by Bishop leftfielder Mike
Albert (Shelby).
Junior righthander Tyler Mott (Grove City) and Earlham pitcher Sy Young
took over from there, trading zeroes for the next 5 innings. Ohio Wesleyan
had Albert at second with none out in the third inning but ended up stranding
him at third, and the Bishops had runners at first and second with one
out in the sixth but Young got senior third baseman Mark Wherry (Dublin/Scioto)
to hit into an inning-ending double play.
Meanwhile, Mott did not allow a runner past first base during the second
through sixth innings and was assisted by a pair of inning-ending double
plays.
Ohio Wesleyan finally got to Young in the seventh. With one out, senior
shortstop Joe Deck (Waverly) singled up the middle and Albert followed
with a single. Whitman walked to load the bases and Derreck Parkevich
came on to pitch for Earlham. Falk walked to force in the tying run and
Loudenslager lofted a fly ball to left to score Albert with the go-ahead
run.
Freshman third baseman Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) delivered an
RBI single, Mott cracked a 2-run double and Wherry followed with a run-scoring
triple to cap the 6-run uprising.
Mott struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to finish off the
complete game. He scattered 6 hits, fanned 3 and walked 1.
Young was charged with the loss for Earlham.
In the nightcap, it was the Quakers who took the early lead, bunching
together a walk, a single, a sacrifice and an RBI ground out.
The Bishops tied the game in the third when Albert led off with a double
and senior second baseman Seth Tenpenny (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne)
followed with a walk. Falk moved the runners up with a sacrifice and Loudenslager
drove in Albert with a ground out.
Wherry gave Ohio Wesleyan took the lead for good with a 2-run homer in
the fourth, scoring Mott, who had led off the inning with a walk.
Earlham closed to within 3-2 in the bottom of the inning on consecutive
doubles by Carr and Adam Fowler and an error by Albert.
The Bishops added some insurance on Mott's 2-run single in the fifth and
scored twice more in the seventh as Schultheis delivered an RBI double
and later scored on the front end of a double steal on which Deck pulled
up to allow the run to score.
The Quakers threatened in the bottom of the seventh, drawing to within
7-4 on Fuller's 2-run double, but freshman righthander Michael Krieger
(Boardman) slammed the door on the rally.
Krieger worked the complete game for the Bishops, striking out 4 and walking
4.
James Plyley pitched the complete game for Earlham and was charged with
the loss.
