Ohio Wesleyan 15, Earlham 8
Ohio Wesleyan 18, Earlham 11

April 19, 2003

Junior righthander Tyler Mott (Grove City) went 4-for-5 and drove in 5 runs in the opener and senior outfielder Travis Falk (Bryan) went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI in the nightcap as Ohio Wesleyan outslugged Earlham to sweep a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Saturday at Richmond, Ind.

Trailing, 3-0, in the opener, the Bishops had their first 7 batters reach base in the third inning on the way to a 6-3 lead. Mott's 2-run, bases-loaded double was the key hit in the frame.

Mott belted another RBI double during a 3-run fourth and had an RBI single to highlight a 4-run fifth for Ohio Wesleyan.

The Bishops tacked on 2 more runs in the sixth for a 15-5 lead, and Earlham rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the inning.

Senior righthander Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) worked the first 6.0 innings for the Bishops to pick up the win. He struck out 5 and walked 3.

In the nightcap, Ohio Wesleyan jumped on Earlham starter Adam Fowler for 8 runs in the first inning. After having 2 out and a runner on first, the Bishops had 8 straight batters reach base on 5 hits, a walk and 2 Quaker errors. Senior first baseman Bo Burnett (Powell/Olentangy), junior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) and j
unior second baseman Brad Whitman (Canfield) drove in runs in the inning.

Earlham was just as rough on Bishop starter Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian), knocking him out of the game with 7 runs in one-third of an inning. The Quakers would score 7 times in the inning, with Jason Besecker hitting a 2-run double and Steve Pearson adding a 2-run single.

Whitman and Falk delivered RBI singles in the second as the Bishops increased their lead to 10-7 and
senior third baseman Mark Wherry (Dublin/Scioto) and senior shortstop Joe Deck (Waverly) drove in runs in the third to make it a 12-7 game.

The Quakers closed to within 12-10 with single runs in the third and fourth and 2 in the fifth off junior righthander Byron Lowe (
Medford, Mass./Cambridge Ridge), but Ohio Wesleyan put the game out of reach with 4 runs in the sixth and 2 in the seventh, with Falk collecting an RBI single in the sixth and a 2-run single in the seventh.

Freshman lefthander Josh Nice (Hinckley/Highland) was credited with the win. Nice blanked the Quakers over the final 3.0 innings, allowing 2 hits while striking out 2 and walking 3
