Ohio
Wesleyan 11, Wittenberg 0
Ohio Wesleyan 9, Wittenberg 8
April
26, 2003
Junior
righthander Tyler Mott (Grove City) fired a 3-hit shutout in the opener,
then drove in the tying run and picked up the mound decision in relief
in the nightcap courtesy of an RBI double by senior shortstop Joe Deck
(Waverly) as Ohio Wesleyan swept a North Coast Athletic Conference West
Division doubleheader from Wittenberg on Saturday at Littick Field.
The Bishops jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as
junior second baseman Brad Whitman (Canfield) and senior outfielder Travis
Falk (Bryan) opened the inning with walks. One out later, Mott singled
through the right side to load the bases. Senior first baseman Bo Burnett
(Powell/Olentangy) followed with a single through the right side to score
Whitman and Falk.
That
would be more than enough for Mott, who allowed a 2-out single to Jon
Komperda in the second, a 1-out double by Komperda in the fifth and a
1-out single by Tom Pickering in the seventh. The Tigers did not have
a runner reach third base and got only 2 baserunners as far as second
base.
Ohio Wesleyan added single runs in the third and fourth, the former on
an infield single by senior third baseman Mark Wherry (Dublin/Scioto)
and the latter when Whitman scored on a throwing error by Wittenberg catcher
Brad Koopman.
Whitman, Falk, senior outfielder Joe Loudenslager (Hilliard/Darby) and
Mott drilled consecutive extra-base hits to knock in runs to highlight
Ohio Wesleyan's 7-run fifth frame.
Mott and Burnett each finished with 3 hits, with Burnett also driving
in 3 runs.
The nightcap appeared as though it would be more of the same when Ohio
Wesleyan jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Whitman opened the
inning with a walk and Falk followed with a homer to right center. Later
in the inning, Mott doubled, took third on a passed ball and scored on
Burnett's ground out.
Wittenberg tied the game with 3 runs in the third. The Tigers racked up
5 hits in the inning, including consecutive RBI singles
by Ryan Born, Pickering and Komperda.
Mott led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run and senior shortstop
Seth Tenpenny (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) added an RBI single later
in the inning to give the Bishops a 5-3 lead, but Wittenberg tied the
game once again, getting back-to-back home runs by Matt Foster and Born
to open the fifth inning and knock out freshman righthander Michael Krieger
(Boardman). Mott came on in relief and retired the next 3 batters.
Junior outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby) gave the Bishops the lead in the
bottom of the sixth with a 2-out, 2-run homer to right center.
Wittenberg came back to take the lead in the top of the seventh. With
one out, Foster walked and Born slammed his second homer of the game to
tie the score. Pickering followed with a single, took second on a ground
out and scored on Whitman's throwing error on an infield single by Adam
Keller.
Falk led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk, moved to third on
Loudenslager's single to right center and scored the tying run on Mott's
sacrifice fly. One out later, Deck lined a double to right center, scoring
Loudenslager with the winning run.
Falk, Loudenslager and Mott each had 2 hits for the Bishops, while Falk,
Mott and Albert each drove in 2 runs.
The 2 wins make Mott the first Ohio Wesleyan pitcher to record wins in
both ends of a doubleheader since John Nye defeated Wooster twice on April
30, 1989.
