Wesleyan 2, Wittenberg 0
Wittenberg 3, Ohio Wesleyan 1
April
27, 2003
Senior
righthander Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) fired a 6-hit shutout
in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader
against Wittenberg on Sunday at Littick Field.
Wittenberg came back to strand 9 Bishop baserunners, including 3 in the
sixth inning, to escape with a win in the nightcap and salvage a split
of the twinbill.
The win in the opener clinched a tie for first place in the NCAC West
Division standings for Ohio Wesleyan. The Bishops and Denison each finished
with 12-4 records in divisional play, with Ohio Wesleyan winning the tiebreaker
on the virtue of winning 3 of 4 games in the series between the teams.
Ohio Wesleyan will host East Division runner-up Allegheny next weekend
in the first round of the NCAC tournament.
In Sunday's opener, the Bishops scratched out a run in the second inning
when junior first baseman Tyler Mott (Grove City) was hit by a pitch to
lead off the inning. Senior first baseman Bo Burnett (Powell/Olentangy)
forced Mott at second, but senior third baseman Mark Wherry (Dublin/Scioto)
followed with a single to right, sending Burnett to third. Junior catcher
Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) plated Burnett with a ground out
to the right side of the Tiger infield.
Ohio Wesleyan added an insurance run in the sixth as senior shortstop
Seth Tenpenny (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) was hit by a pitch and senior
outfielder Joe Loudenslager (Hilliard/Darby) followed with a double down
the leftfield line, scoring pinch-runner David Schaub (Canton/Central
Catholic).
Burchett scattered 6 hits in going the distance on the mound. He struck
out 2 and walked 3. Ryan Goldschmidt threw the complete game for Wittenberg,
holding the Bishops to 4 hits.
In the nightcap, the Bishops again jumped into the lead when Schaub led
off the third inning with an infield single. Senior outfielder Jeff Bing
(Toledo/Ottawa Hills) forced Schaub at second, then moved up to second
on a ground out by senior outfielder Travis Falk (Bryan). Loudenslager
followed with a single that moved Bing to third and Bing scored when Wittenberg
shortstop K.R. Schlievert was charged with an error on the play.
Wittenberg took the lead with 2 runs in the top of the fourth. With one
out, Matt Foster walked. Tom Pickering followed with a single to third
base and Adam Keller tied the game with a single through the right side.
Pickering scored the go-ahead run on a fielding error by second baseman
Loudenslager, with Keller thrown out at the plate trying to score on the
play.
The Bishops threatened in the fifth, when Schultheis opened the inning
with a single off Tiger pitcher Steve Less and moved to second on Less'
throwing error on the play, but Schultheis was stranded there. Ohio Wesleyan
threatened again in the sixth when Falk led off with an infield single
and Loudenslager followed with a single to center, moving Falk to second.
Mott then grounded to third, with Falk staying alive long enough to allow
the runners behind him to reach first and second. After Burnett flied
to right, Wherry singled to shortstop to load the bases, but Schultheis
flied to right to end the inning.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the seventh on Pickering's RBI single.
Freshman lefthander Josh Nice (Hinckley/Highland) was the starting and
losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan. He worked 5.1 innings and allowed 4
hits while striking out 2 and walking 5. Junior lefthander Mike Grady
(North Canton/Hoover) finished up on the mound.
Less pitched the complete game for Wittenberg, allowing 8 hits while striking
out 1 and walking none.
