Otterbein 8, Ohio Wesleyan 7

April 30, 2003

Tyler Shaw's 3-run homer in the bottom of the ninth gave Otterbein a non-conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday in Westerville.

The Bishops had taken a 1-0 lead in the second on a leadoff double by senior first baseman Bo Burnett (Powell/Olentangy) and an RBI single by senior third baseman Mark Wherry (Dublin/Scioto).

Ohio Wesleyan hiked the lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Junior designated hitter Tyler Mott (Grove City) led off with a walk and Burnett followed with a single, sending Mott to third. Wherry singled in Mott to make the score 2-0. Senior outfielder Travis Falk (Bryan) followed with a single but was thrown out rounding the bag on the play, with Burnett taking third and Wherry moving to second. Junior outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby) scored Burnett with a sacrifice fly and junior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) plated Wherry with a single to center.

The Bishops added 3 more runs in the top of the sixth when Falk led off with a double, moved to third on Albert's sacrifice and scored when Cardinal third baseman Matt Hunter made an error Schultheis' grounder. Schultheis took second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by senior shortstop Joe Deck (Waverly). Deck moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Hunter made an error on a grounder off the bat of senior outfielder Joe Loudenslager (Hilliard/Darby).

Otterbein rallied with 5 runs in the bottom of the sixth, stringing together 4 hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly. Freshman righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian), who had limited Otterbein to 2 hits over the first 5.0 innings, was relieved by freshman righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman), who got out of the inning with the Bishops leading 7-5.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with nobody out on a walk to Mott, a single by Burnett and Wherry's hit by pitch, but Otterbein's John Frank came on in relief of Timmy Holloway and struck out Falk, then got Albert to hit into an inning-ending double play.

Dustin Lee opened the Otterbein ninth with a single and Tory Allen followed with a single, sending Lee to second. After Aaron Stupica sacrificed the runners to second and third, Shaw connected on a 3-run homer.

Krieger, who had thrown hitless seventh and eighth innings, was charged with the loss. Frank, who held the Bishops hitless over the last 3.0 innings, picked up the win
