Ohio Wesleyan 7, Mount Vernon Nazarene 6

Junior outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby) singled in the game-winning in the bottom of the ninth to lift Ohio Wesleyan to a non-conference win over Mount Vernon Nazarene on Thursday at Littick Field.

Trailing, 5-3, going into the bottom of the seventh, the Bishops rallied to take a 6-5 lead when junior second baseman Brad Whitman (Canfield) led off with a walk and senior outfielder Joe Loudenslager (Hilliard/Darby) followed with a homer to left center. Junior designated hitter Tyler Mott (Grove City) and senior first baseman Bo Burnett (Powell/Olentangy) followed with singles and moved to second and third on a sacrifice by senior third baseman Mark Wherry (Dublin/Scioto). Senior outfielder Travis Falk (Bryan) then popped a ball into short left center that fell amidst the Cougar defense, scoring Mott with the go-ahead run. One out later, junior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but the inning ended when senior shortstop Seth Tenpenny (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) bounced out.

Junior righthander Byron Lowe (Medford, Mass./Cambridge Ridge) pitched a scoreless eighth and senior righthander Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) came in to pitch the ninth with Ohio Wesleyan still holding a 6-5 lead.

Brent Zimmerman led off with a ball that hit the pitcher's mound and bounced over freshman shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) for a hit. Tim Martini sacrificed Zimmerman to second and Dan Matheney followed with a single to right that looked like it would score the tying run, but Zimmerman held at third, with Matheney taking second on the throw.

The Bishops then intentionally walked Josh Sichina to load the bases, and the strategy seemed to pay off when Michael Grove smacked a hard grounder toward shortstop, but Williams didn't field the ball cleanly, and while his throw to second was in time to get Sichina, Grove was able to beat the relay to first while Zimmerman scored the tying run.

Wherry opened the Ohio Wesleyan ninth with a single to right and Falk dropped a sacrifice bunt, but Cougar pitcher Brian Barrish mishandled the ball and then threw wildly to first base, with pinch-runner David Schaub (Canton/Central Catholic) taking third on the play. Albert followed with a bloop down the right field line that fell in, scoring Schaub from third.

Mount Vernon Nazarene had taken a 2-0 lead in the first on a Matheney single, a wild pitch, Sichina's RBI single and a 2-out fielding error by Burnett. Matheney belted a solo homer in the third to make it 3-0.

Ohio Wesleyan got on the board in the fourth, when Schultheis delivered a 2-out, bases-loaded single to score Burnett and Wherry.

The Cougars picked up a run in the fifth on Matheney's single, 2 wild pitches and a throwing error by Schultheis, but the Bishops answered with a run in the sixth when Schultheis came through with another bases-loaded RBI single.

Freshman righthander Billy Kampmann (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) made his first collegiate start, working 6-plus innings and allowing 6 hits while striking out 1. Junior lefthander Mike Grady (North Canton/Hoover) pitched the seventh inning. Burchett was credited with the win.

Kyle Peters started for Mount Vernon and struck out 7 over the first 5.1 innings. Carl Langley allowed 3 runs during his 1.2 innings of work and Barrish was charged with the loss.
