Ohio Wesleyan 2, Allegheny 1
Ohio Wesleyan 10, Allegheny 8

May 3, 2003

Junior righthander Tyler Mott (Grove City) scored both runs and pitched Ohio Wesleyan to a win in the opener, and junior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) doubled in the go-ahead run in the nightcap as Ohio Wesleyan swept Allegheny in the first round of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday at Littick Field.

The Bishops advance to the tournament finals to play either Denison or Wooster on Thursday and Friday at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium in Canton. Denison and Wooster split their doubleheader on Saturday, with Denison winning the opener, 8-6, and Wooster taking the nightcap by a score of 10-0. The teams will play on Sunday with the winner advancing to the tournament finals.

In the opener, Ohio Wesleyan jumped to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Mott ripped a 2-out double down the leftfield line and scored on a single by senior first baseman Bo Burnett (Powell/Olentangy).

The Bishops made it 2-0 in the third. With one out, Mott reached on an infield single and moved to second on an error by Gator second baseman Brian Moore, who dropped a throw on Burnett's fielder's choice grounder. Senior third baseman Mark Wherry (Dublin/Scioto) followed with a walk to load the bases and senior outfielder Travis Falk (Bryan) followed with a grounder to short that forced Wherry at second. Falk, however, beat the throw to first as Mott scored.

After that, Mott and Gator pitcher Josh Sharpless settled into a pitcher's duel. Sharpless stranded 2 Bishop runners in the fifth, but Mott was just as effective, leaving 2 Allegheny runners on base in the fifth and another in the sixth.

Allegheny scored in the seventh inning as Lee Tenace led off with a double, took third on Evan Vonleer's single and scored on Chris Bartell's single, but Mott bounced back to strike out Zack Oblak and get Hector Ureba on a grounder to get out of the inning.

Mott scattered 10 hits in working the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan. He struck out 2 and walked none in raising his record to 10-0 on the season.

Sharpless struck out 9 and walked 6 for Allegheny.

In the nightcap, the Bishops broke an 8-8 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete the sweep.

Wherry led off with a walk and, 2 outs later, scored on Schultheis' double to right center. Senior shortstop Joe Deck (Waverly) followed with a single to center that scored Schultheis with an insurance run.

Junior lefthander Mike Grady (North Canton/Hoover), the fifth Ohio Wesleyan pitcher, allowed a leadoff single to Sam McCarthy in the Gator ninth but came back to get Vonleer to ground into a double play. Bartell was hit by a pitch to keep the Allegheny hopes alive, but Grady retired C.J. Krepps on a popup to end the game.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 2-0 lead in the first when senior outfielder Joe Loudenslager (Hilliard/Darby) scored on a failed pickoff attempt and Burnett added an RBI single later in the inning.

Allegheny got on the scoreboard in the second on Brandon Porter's leadoff home run, but the Bishops got the run back in the bottom of the inning as Falk and s
enior outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby) opened the inning with singles. Falk then moved to third on a double play ball off the bat of Schultheis and scored on a wild pitch.

The Bishops added 4 runs in the third, with Mott belting an RBI double, Falk and Albert contributing RBI singles and Schultheis adding a sacrifice fly. Ohio Wesleyan made it 8-1 with a run in the fourth courtesy of Burnett's RBI double to right center.

Allegheny came back with 3 runs in the third, with Vonleer leading off the frame with a home run and Moore lining an RBI single and the final run scoring on Albert's throwing error. The Gators chipped away with 2 more in the sixth, with Oblak and Urena knocking in the runs, and tied the game with 2 runs in the seventh on Urena's bases-loaded walk and Moore's RBI single.

Freshman righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) started for the Bishops, working 4.1 innings and allowing 4 hits. Freshman lefthander Josh Nice (Hinckley/Highland) and junior righthander Byron Lowe (Medford, Mass./Cambridge Ridge) worked in relief and Mott came in to pitch during the seventh and ended the Gator rally.

Grady was credited with the win, allowing just 1 hit over the final 2.0 innings and striking out 1.

Jon Schmitt, the fourth of 5 Allegheny pitchers, was charged with the loss.
