Ohio Wesleyan 10, Denison 2

May 9, 2003

Junior righthander Tyler Mott (Grove City) doubled in the go-ahead run, senior first baseman Bo Burnett (Powell/Olentangy) followed with a 2-run double and senior third baseman Mark Wherry (Dublin/Scioto) smashed a 2-run homer to cap a 5-run third inning, and senior righthander Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) turned in a fine pitching performance to lead the Bishops over Denison in Game 2 of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament finals on Friday at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium in Canton.

With the 2-game sweep in the tournament finals, Ohio Wesleyan wins its third NCAC championship in the past 4 seasons and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Teams, dates and sites for NCAA Division III regional play will be announced on Monday.

Denison's Drew Shamrock and Burchett locked into a pitching duel for the first 2 innings, but that ended in the third. Senior shortstop Joe Deck (Waverly) led off with a walk, took second on a balk, and moved to third on a single to left by senior outfielder Joe Loudenslager (Hilliard/Darby). Mott followed with a double down the leftfield line, scoring Deck, and Burnett followed with a double to plate Loudenslager and Mott. Wherry then launched a drive over the fence in left to give the Bishops a 5-0 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan added to the lead with 4 runs in the fifth. Mott, Burnett and Wherry opened the inning with singles to load the bases and knock out Shamrock. Senior outfielder Travis Falk (Bryan) followed with a 2-run single to left, and both Wherry and Falk scored on a double by junior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson).

Denison got on the board in the sixth as Adam Mandel opened the inning with a single and scored on Shamrock's double, but Burchett got through the rest of the inning unscathed.

The Big Red added a run in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to Mandel.

Ohio Wesleyan got that run back in the ninth on an RBI single by senior outfielder David Schaub (Canton/Central Catholic).

Burchett scattered 8 hits through the first 7.0 innings but walked Lee Fischer to open the eighth before Cam Cowden singled to put runners on first and second.

Junior lefthander Mike Grady (North Canton/Hoover) came on in relief and got out of the inning with the aid of the pitcher's best friend -- a triple play. Brian Mulcahy hit a liner back up the middle that deflected off Grady to Deck at shortstop. Deck caught the line drive, stepped on second to retire Fischer and threw to first to get Cowden and complete Ohio Wesleyan's first triple play since the 2000 season.

Burchett was credited with the win, allowing 9 hits in 7-plus innings. Shamrock was charged with the loss.

Mott was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after pitching the Bishops to a win in Game 1 of the finals and driving in the go-ahead run in Game 2. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Burchett, Wherry, Falk and Burnett.
