Ohio Wesleyan 10, Hope 1

Junior righthander Tyler Mott (Grove City) held Hope to 5 hits over the first 8 innings and drove in 3 runs to lead the Bishops over the Flying Dutchmen in Game 2 of the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional on Thursday at Littick Field.

Ohio Wesleyan advances to face Benedictine (Ill.) in the winners bracket final at 3 p.m. on Friday, while Hope will play Anderson (Ind.) in an elimination game at 11 a.m. on Friday.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Junior outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby) singled with 2 outs and junior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) followed with a fly ball to leftfield that Hope leftfielder Aaron Quimby fell down while pursuing. The ball fell for a double, scoring Albert.

The Bishops added a run in the second when junior second baseman Brad Whitman (Canfield) led off the inning by striking out but reached first on a wild pitch on the third strike. Whitman stole second, moved to third on a ground out by senior outfielder Joe Loudenslager (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) and scored on Mott's ground out.

Hope closed to within 2-1 in the fourth when B.J. Maas reached on an error by senior shortstop Joe Deck (Waverly), advanced to third when senior third baseman Mark Wherry (Dublin/Scioto) committed a throwing error on a grounder by Kyle Blackport, and scored on Casey Glass' ground out.

But Ohio Wesleyan got that run and more back in the fifth when Whitman led off with a walk and, one out later, scored on Mott's homer to left center. Two batters later, Wherry slammed a homer to straightaway center to give the Bishops a 5-1 lead.

Whitman singled in a run in the sixth and the Bishops tacked on 2 more runs in the seventh on Deck's 2-run single, then added RBI singles by Wherry and Albert in the eighth for the 10-1 final.

Mott pitched the first 8.0 innings, scattering 5 hits and striking out 2 while walking none.

Hope starter Matt Widenmier, who allowed 8 hits and 6 runs over the first 5.1 innings, was charged with the loss.

Albert led the Bishops with a 4-for-4 outing, while Wherry finished the day 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Loudenslager and Schultheis contributed 2 hits apiece.

Hope was led by Eric MacKenzie, who had 2 hits.
