Ohio Wesleyan 38, Denison 20

Sept. 21, 2002

[ Jason Osborne ]Senior tailback Jason Osborne (Oak Harbor) ran for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns to power the Battling Bishops to a win over Denison in non-conference play on Saturday at Selby Field.

Denison jumped to a 7-0 lead by engineering a 70-yard, 11-play drive on the game's opening possession. Phil Bowhuis went over from 2 yards out for the touchdown.

The Bishops tied the game later in the first quarter after taking over on the Denison 28-yard line following a short Big Red punt. Sophomore quarterback Jeff Hanna (Wadsworth) hit junior split end Bryan Beigie (Shaker Heights/Walsh Jesuit) for 8 yards, and after a Denison sack, found Beigie again for a 20-yard gain down to the Big Red 10. Osborne took over from there, going up the middle on the next play for a 10-yard touchdown run.

Ohio Wesleyan's defense did not allow a yard to Denison on its next possession, and the Bishops took over on their own 34-yard line. Osborne reeled off gains of 15 and 10 yards, and a key roughing the passer penalty on third-and-13 from the Big Red 31 kept the drive alive. Hanna capped the drive with a 10-yard strike to freshman tight end Colby Welanetz (Carlsbad, Calif.) on the last play of the first quarter, putting the Bishops ahead to stay.

The Big Red closed to within 14-13 with another long drive, marching 66 yards in 9 plays. Bouwhuis covered the last 4 yards on a draw play, giving Denison a chance to tie the game, but Ohio Wesleyan linebacker Billy Chrisovergis (Dayton/Bellbrook) blocked the extra point try to preserve the Bishop lead.

Ohio Wesleyan answered with a long drive of its own, running the ball for 11 straight plays to cover 76 yards, with sophomore halfback Eric Indiciani (Delaware/Olentangy) sweeping around right end from 5 yards out to give the Bishops a 21-13 halftime lead.

Osborne broke loose on a 68-yard scoring run on Ohio Wesleyan's first possession of the second half and freshman tailback Jake Shank (Northwood/Cardinal Stritch) scored on a 21-yard run with 5:24 to play in the third quarter. Freshman Jason Whitcomb (Wauseon) booted a 23-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter to wrap up the Ohio Wesleyan scoring.

Osborne's 175 yards came in only 18 carries, while Shank finished with 79 yards in 7 rushes. Hanna completed 8 of 16 passes for 92 yards, with Beigie making 2 catches for 28 yards.

Denison's Larry Cappetto completed 14 of 34 passes for 183 yards and Zack Daubenmire came on in the fourth quarter to complete 4 of 8 passes for 45 yards. Ryan Hite caught 5 passes for 76 yards and Frank Roe had 4 catches for 61 yards. Bowhuis led Big Red rushers with 36 yards in 12 carries.

Senior cornerback Steve Siefert (Sylvania/Northview), freshman cornerback Justin Blackburn (Wadsworth) and freshman safety Ryan McCarty (Grove City/Bishop Ready) each picked off Denison passes and senior end Dave Healy (Sylvania/Northview) and junior linebacker Kent Weakley (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) each recorded a sack to highlight the Bishop defense. Junior linebacker Kent Weakley (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) led the Bishops with 5 tackles, including a sack, while Chrisovergis added 4 stops. Blackburn made 4 tackles and intercepted a pass.
