Ohio
Wesleyan 42, Kenyon 3
Nov. 2, 2002
Senior
tailback Jimmy Kinch (Painesville/Riverside), sophomore halfback Eric
Indiciani (Delaware/Olentangy) and junior linebacker Kent Weakley (Plain
City/Dublin Scioto) scored touchdowns as Ohio Wesleyan jumped to a 21-0
lead and went on to defeat Kenyon in North Coast Athletic Conference action
on Saturday at Selby Field.
After a short Kenyon punt gave the Bishops excellent field position at
the Lord 28-yard line, Ohio Wesleyan was on the scoreboard in 4 plays.
Junior halfback Chad Smith (Prospect/Elgin) stormed around left end for
17 yards on a third-and-1 play from the Kenyon 19 and Kinch went over
on the next play for a 7-0 Bishop lead.
Ohio Wesleyan kept it on the ground on its next scoring drive, running
the ball on 12 straight plays. Sophomore tailback Jake Shank (Northwood/Cardinal
Stritch) picked up 35 yards on 6 carries during the drive, and Indiciani
converted a pair of third-down situations, reeling off gains of 14 and
12 yards in a third-and-short situations. Indiciani went over from 1 yard
out to cap the drive with 4:31 left in the first half.
The Bishops added another touchdown shortly thereafter when Weakley intercepted
a Brad Noojin pass and went down the left sideline for a 49-yard touchdown
with 2:48 left in the half.
Kenyon got on the scoreboard at the end of the half. The Lords had stopped
the Bishops on a fourth-down conversion attempt from the Kenyon 43, and
turned the ball over to tailback Calvin Hatfield. Hatfield picked up 7
yards on a screen pass and 29 more on a draw play to give the Lords a
first down at the Ohio Wesleyan 19. Another screen pass to Hatfield gained
only 1 yard, however, but Kenyon moved down to the Bishop 9 on a defensive
holding penalty, and then called on Ben Woodcock for a 26-yard field goal
attempt. Woodcock's try split the uprights as the half ended for a 21-3
score.
Ohio Wesleyan answered with a touchdown drive on the opening possession
of the second half, with sophomore quarterback Jeff Hanna (Wadsworth)
connecting with freshman split end Scott Kovelan (North Olmsted) on a
5-yard touchdown pass with 11:38 left in the third quarter. Big plays
in the drive included a 34-yard run by freshman tailback Matt Carducci
(Hudson) and a 20-yard burst by Smith.
The Bishops scored on their next possession as well, converting a pair
of fourth-down opportunities. Smith picked up 3 yards on fourth-and-2
from the Ohio Wesleyan 39, and later in the drive, Hanna found Indiciani
for 16 yards on fourth-and-7 from the Kenyon 19. Indiciani scored from
3 yards out on the next play to give the Bishops a 35-3 lead.
Shank wrapped up the scoring with a 27-yard touchdown run in the fourth
quarter.
Shank led the Bishops with 77 yards on 9 carries, while Smith followed
with 74 yards on 9 carries and Indiciani had 72 yards on 9 carries, including
2 TD runs. Carducci finished with 54 yards on 8 carries. Hatfield led
Kenyon with 95 yards on 23 attempts. Ohio Wesleyan outgained Kenyon, 361-90,
on the ground.
Hanna completed 6 of 16 passes for 81 yards and 1 TD, with freshman tight
end Colby Welanetz (Carlsbad, Calif.) catching 2 passes for 12 yards.
Noojin connected on 9 of 28 throws for 55 yards, with 3 going to Hatfield
for 25 yards.
Defensive standouts included junior linebacker Billy Chrisovergis (Dayton/Bellbrook),
who led the Bishops with 9 tackles, including 1 for loss; Weakley, whose
7 stops included a sack; junior end Travis Little (Wheelersburg), who
made 4 tackles, including a sack and another for loss; and junior tackle
Mike Kohr (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo), who had 4 tackles, including
1 for loss.
