Matt Smith scored the last 5 points of a 9-0 burst that put
Wooster ahead to stay in a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Ohio
Wesleyan on Wednesday at Wooster.
Junior center Travis Schwab (Medina) scored to give the Bishops a 48-46
lead with 11:04 left in regulation time.
Ohio Wesleyan had trailed, 40-32, with 16:58 left before the Bishops wiped
out that deficit with a 12-4 run. Schwab hit a 3-point jumper and a traditional-style
3-point play, and freshman guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic)
buried a 3-pointer to tie the game at 44-44.
Wooster's Ryan Snyder tied the game at 48-48, then Bryan Nelson hit a
jumper for a 50-48 Scot lead with 10:17 left before Smith hit a 3-pointer
with 9:39 to play and followed with a jumper with for a 55-48 lead 6:09
to go.
Schwab answered with a 3-pointer play to bring the Bishops within 55-51,
but Wooster padded the lead with a 7-1 burst and Ohio Wesleyan did not
come closer than 8 points during the final 4 minutes.
Schwab
led the Bishops with 21 points and 6 rebounds. Rybarczyk led the Bishops
with 5 assists.
Smith and Blake Mealer shared the Wooster lead with 17 points apiece,
while Nelson finished with 10 points. Mealer had a team-high 8 rebounds
and Rodney Mitchell and Kyle Witucky each had 4 assists.
