Ohio
Wesleyan 60, Earlham 56
Feb.
15, 2003
Sophomore guard Bryan King (Sidney) buried back-to-back 3-pointers
to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead and the Bishops did not trail again, holding
off Earlham down the stretch to take a North Coast Athletic Conference
win over the Quakers on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Ohio Wesleyan seemed ready to run away with the game in the first half,
overcoming an early 8-2 deficit with a 16-3 run and adding another 8-0
burst to take a 26-16 lead with 6:50 left in the first half.
But the Bishops cooled down, getting just one more basket during the rest
of the first half. Meanwhile the Quakers assembled a 10-2 run, with the
most spectacular play coming on Brandon Miller's rebound dunk. Miller
added a pair of free throws to bring the Quakers within 28-26 at the end
of the first half.
Earlham continued its run early in the second half, tying the game on
Brady Keaton's lay-in and then taking the lead on a Nathan Stoops 3-pointer.
King followed with a pair of 3-pointers just 20 seconds apart, giving
Ohio Wesleyan a 36-32 lead with 17:44 left in the game.
Earlham rallied to tie the game twice, evening the score at 36-36 as Miller
and Sean O'Reilley scored, and later tying the game at 42-42 with 12:01
remaining.
This time, freshman guard Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) buried a 3-pointer
to put the Bishops ahead to stay, and after Earlham's Markous Jewett scored
to close the gap to 45-44, Ohio Wesleyan put together a 9-0 burst that
featured 2 baskets by sophomore forward Brandon Cole (Sidney) and a 3-pointer
by senior guard Jason Dopoulos (Strongsville), the latter giving Ohio
Wesleyan a 54-44 lead with 6:42 to play.
Earlham opened up from long range, getting 3-pointers from Tyler Stewart,
Stoops and Jewett to come within 57-53 with 3:20 to play.
Cole made it 59-53 with a pair of free throws with :46.6 showing, but
O'Reilley's bomb from the right corner brought Earlham within 59-56 with
:13.6 seconds left.
Senior guard Kyle Comstock (Sunbury/Buckeye Valley) hiked the lead to
4 points with a free throw with :12.5 left, and O'Reilley missed a 3-point
shot on the Quakers' final possession.
Junior center Travis Schwab (Medina) led the Bishops with 14 points. Cole
finished with 12 points and a season-high 15 rebounds. Dopoulos and freshman
guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) shared the team lead with
3 assists apiece.
Jewett led Earlham with 12 points and 3 assists, O'Reilley finished with
11 points and a team-high 8 rebounds and Stoops added 10 points.
