Wooster 73, Ohio Wesleyan 60

Feb. 19, 2003

Blake Mealer highlighted a first-half run that put Wooster ahead to stay and scored key baskets to thwart a pair of Battling Bishop threats in the second half as the Fighting Scots topped Ohio Wesleyan in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

With senior guard Jason Dopoulos (Strongsville) leading the way with a 3-pointer and a pair of jumpers, Ohio Wesleyan jumped to an early 14-7 lead. Junior center Charlie Smith (Centerburg) had a pair of baskets and junior center Travis Schwab (Medina) converted a 3-point play during the run.

Wooster took the lead with a 10-0 run capped by Mealer's 3-point play, which gave the Scots a 15-14 lead with 13:42 left in the first half, and another Mealer jumper less than a minute later that made the score 17-14.

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 32-28 with less than 3 minutes in the first half, but sparkplug guard Rodney Mitchell led a Scot spurt to end the half. Mitchell drove the lane for a basket and hit 4 straight free throws in the final minute of the half to give Wooster a 42-30 halftime lead.

The Bishops threatened right away in the second half, with Schwab draining a 3-pointer and then 2 free throws awarded when Wooster's Bryan Nelson was called for an offensive foul for his third personal and then a technical foul for his fourth. The free throws brought the Bishops within 42-35 with 18:13 left in regulation time.

After a Matt Schlingman jumper, Mealer converted back-to-back lay-ins off Schlingman feeds for a 48-38 Wooster lead, then hit a 3-pointer that started a 10-5 run that stretched the Scot advantage to 58-43 with 9:52 remaining.

Ohio Wesleyan challenged once more, putting together an 11-2 run that featured a 3-pointer by senior guard Kyle Comstock (Sunbury/Buckeye Valley) and an old-fashioned 3-point play by Schwab. The run brought the Bishops within 62-54 with 4:47 to play.

But Mealer answered for Wooster, hitting a 3-pointer to end the Bishop run. Nelson followed with a lay-in to hike the lead to 67-54 and the teams traded points for the remainder of the game.

Schwab led the Bishops with 22 points, while Cole finished with 11 points and a team-high 8 rebounds and Smith ended up with 10 points. Cole and Schwab shared the team lead with 2 assists apiece.

Mitchell led Wooster with 20 points, while Mealer contributed 19 points. Nelson added 11 points and a team-leading 8 rebounds.
