Ohio Wesleyan 88, Adrian 73

Senior guard Kyle Comstock (Sunbury/Buckeye Valley) hit a pair of free throws to put the Bishops ahead to stay and Ohio Wesleyan pulled away in the second half to top Adrian in the championship game of Adrian College's John Dawson Invitational on Saturday in Adrian, Mich.

The Bulldogs jumped to a 3-0 lead on a 3-pointer by Anthony Thornton less than a minute into the game and led, 5-2, after Dan Walter's basket.

Junior center Travis Schwab (Medina) then hit a layup and Comstock followed with a pair of free throws to give Ohio Wesleyan a 6-5 lead, and Schwab added another basket and 2 free throws for a 10-5 Bishop advantage.

Ohio Wesleyan extended the lead to 33-21 late in the first half before the Bulldogs made a charge. Led by a Steve Brooks 3-pointer and a pair of Brooks free throws, Adrian cut the deficit to 33-28 in less than a minute and a half, but the Bishops closed the first half with a 6-0 run, with sophomore forward Brandon Cole (Sidney) contributing 2 free throws and a bucket.

A 9-0 run early in the second half padded the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 18 points and the Bishops did not let Adrian come closer than 8 points during the rest of the game.

Schwab led the Bishops with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Cole had a perfect shooting night, going 7-for-7 from the field -- including 4-of-4 from 3-point range -- and 4-for-4 from the line on the way to 22 points. Sophomore guard Bryan King (Sidney) added 14 points and Comstock finished with 12 points. Freshman guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) led the Bishops with 5 assists.

Brian Schaefer led Adrian with 24 points and 4 assists. Walter finished with 13 points, Adam Novak had 12 points and Anthony Thornton contributed 10 points.

Schwab was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Cole, Adrian's Novak and Schaefer, Heidelberg's Lucas Messer and MacMurray's Derek Settles.
