Ohio Wesleyan 76, Hiram 64

Junior center Travis Schwab (Medina) and sophomore forward Brandon Cole (Sidney) each posted double-doubles to lead the Bishops past Hiram in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday in Hiram.

Hiram jumped out to an early six-point lead at 13-7 on a 3-pointer by Matt Kersten at the 9:39 mark, but Ohio Wesleyan battled back to tie the game at 14-14.

Schwab hit a lay-in with 6:15 left in the first half. The basket not only broke a 17-17 tie and put the Bishops ahead to stay, but was the 1000th career point for the Bishop center.

The Terriers kept close and closed to within 29-26 at halftime on a 3-point play by Allen Kirkpatrick.

In the second half, Schwab took over, scoring 13 of his game-high 19 points in the period.

After Hiram cut the Bishops' lead to one point at 31-30, Schwab scored 9 points during a 17-4 Ohio Wesleyan run that pushed the lead to 12 points at 46-34 with 13:48 to play.

Hiram closed within 7 points at 51-44 when David Mayle connected on a jumper with 9:32 remaining, but senior guard Kyle Comstock (Sunbury/Buckeye Valley) scored 5 straight points for the Bishops to push the lead to 12 and put the game away.

Schwab led all scorers with his 19 points and also added 12 rebounds. Cole scored 17 points, including 11 in the first half, and hauled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Freshman guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) added 12 points off the bench and dished out a team-high 8 assists.

Hiram was led by Kirkpatrick's 15 points while Kersten added 14 and Mayle 12. Brian Cecil matched Cole with 14 rebounds.
