Dominican
57, Ohio Wesleyan 55
Dec.
22, 2002
Juan Gibson hit a 3-pointer with 1:09 to play to put Dominican
ahead to stay and grabbed a key offensive rebound in the closing seconds
as the Stars held on for a win over Ohio Wesleyan in the championship
game of the Bill Merris Tip-Off Classic hosted by Illinois College on
Sunday in Jacksonville, Ill.
Rose-Hulman defeated Illinois College, 77-65, in Sunday's consolation
game.
Dominican
led 30-25 at halftime and jumped to a 10-point lead when Eric Dunn opened
the second half with a 3-pointer and Trevor Giancarlo followed with a
basket.
Ohio Wesleyan answered with an 11-3 run to close within 38-36 with 13:25
remaining. Senior guard Jason Dopoulos (Strongsville) started the burst
with a 3-pointer, junior center Travis Schwab (Medina) scored 4 points
and junior center Charlie Smith (Centerburg) and freshman forward Brandon
Cole (Sidney) each had 2 points.
The Stars then used a 9-2 run to pad the lead to 9 points at 47-38 with
10:34 remaining, then the Bishops outscored the Stars, 9-2, to come back
within 2 points before sophomore guard Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks)
tied the game at 54-54 with a 3-pointer with 2:23 remaining.
Each team had a chance to break the tie but missed a shot before Gibson
netted the go-ahead basket. After the Stars took the lead, Giancarlo cleared
a defensive rebound and Gibson picked up a key offensive rebound that
allowed Dominican to run the clock down.
Cole was fouled in the closing seconds and hit the first free throw to
bring the Bishops within 57-55. Cole deliberately missed the second free
throw in order to give the Bishops a chance at a game-tying tip-in, but
Gibson snagged the rebound to end the game.
Cole led all players with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Schwab contributed
11 points and Reed and freshman guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic)
shared the team lead with 3 assists apiece.
David Crews led Dominican with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Dunn and Gibson
each added 10 points.
Cole and Schwab represented Ohio Wesleyan on the all-tournament team.
They were joined by Crews, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable
Player, and Dunn from Dominican; Rose-Hulman's Munchie Muskeyvalley and
Illinois College's Chad Tobin.
