Aug. 31, 2002

Junior midfielder Paul Smith (Dublin/Columbus Watterson) broke a scoreless tie early the in the second half and senior back Chris Vorenkamp (Brutus, Mich./Petoskey) added an insurance goal to give Ohio Wesleyan a win in the championship game of the Fred Myers Invitational on Saturday night at Roy Rike Field.

Olivet defeated Case Reserve in the consolation game.

After a scoreless first half in which Bethany outshot the Bishops, 5-2, Ohio Wesleyan manufactured more scoring chances in the second half.

The Bishops got on the scoreboard when a shot inside the box was blocked by a Bethany defender and caromed out to Smith about 25 yards from the goal. He took a touch and then ripped a shot into the net with 33:29 left in regulation time.

Vorenkamp's insurance goal, a 22-yard direct kick that went inside the left post, came with 9:01 left in regulation time.

Bethany outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 11-10. Junior Adam Roberts (Worthington/Wellington) stopped 2 shots for the Bishops, while Ryann Bradley had 1 save for the Bison.

In Saturday's opener, Olivet's Eric Cole provided the only scoring by converting a penalty kick 6:09 into the game. Case Reserve's John Cheveney initially leaned to his left, then dove right, but the shot skimmed just beyond his reach.

Case Reserve outshot Olivet, 12-6. Willem Drogt had 4 saves for the Comets, while Cheveney finished with 1 save for the Spartans.

Vorenkamp received the Dick Gauthier Award as the Myers Invitational's Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by junior midfielder Jeff Krigbaum (Canal Winchester), Roberts and Smith.
