Ohio Wesleyan 2, Hiram 0
Hiram 6, Ohio Wesleyan 1

April 26, 2003

Senior righthander Emily Thornton (Columbus/Watterson) fired a 5-hit shutout in the opener, but Hiram erupted for 4 runs in the first inning and went on to salvage a split
of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday in Hiram.

The Ohio Wesleyan split, combined with Wooster's split against Kenyon, gives the Bishops fourth place in the NCAC standings and a spot in the upcoming NCAC tournament. Denison (12-2) clinched first place with a sweep of Oberlin on Saturday, while Wittenberg (10-4) locked up second place with a split against third-place Allegheny (9-4-1) on Saturday. Ohio Wesleyan (8-6) finished fourth, just ahead of Wooster (7-6-1). It is the second NCAC tournament appearance in the last 3 seasons for Ohio Wesleyan.

In the opener at Hiram, the Bishops scratched out an unearned run in the top of the third. With 2 out, freshman catcher Linsey Longstreth (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) reached third on an error by Hiram leftfielder Jamie Hanson, then scored on a passed ball.

Ohio Wesleyan added an insurance run in the seventh when junior outfielder Sandra Mowery (Euclid) led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice by junior outfielder Tiffany Soggs (North Royalton) and scored on a single by senior outfielder Tammy Blair (Radnor/Buckeye Valley).

Thornton allowed 5 hits and stranded runners at third in 2 different innings. Jen Melfi worked the complete game for Hiram.

Blair and
freshman third baseman Amy Mazur (Elyria) each had 2 hits for Ohio Wesleyan.

In the nightcap, Hiram wasted no time in taking a 4-0, first-inning lead. Amanda Weigand opened the inning with a double down the leftfield line and Anna Feliciano followed with a single. Throwing errors by Longstreth and Mowery scored both runs before Monica Hayden doubled to right, Jamie Hanson tripled to right center and Audra Byler doubled to left center, knocking out sophomore righthander Janelle Thompson (Delaware/Hayes). Blair came in to pitch and got out of the inning without any further damage.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the fourth when Mazur led off with a double and freshman shortstop Tiffany Stinemetz (Marysville/North Union) followed with a single to center that scored Mazur, with Stinemetz taking second on the throw. Freshman outfielder Britt Born (Caledonia/Marion Harding) followed with a single that sent Stinemetz to third, but Mowery grounded out to third base, with Stinemetz thrown out at home on the play, and sophomore outfielder Meredith Krajewski (Macedonia/Walsh Jesuit) followed with a ground out to end the inning.

The Bishops had runners at second and third with one out in the fifth but stranded both, and threatened again in the sixth but left the bases loaded.

Thompson was charged with the loss. Melfi worked the complete game for Hiram
.
