Ohio Wesleyan 65, Wooster 61

Jan. 4, 2003

Sophomore post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) scored to break a 61-61 tie and sophomore wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) and senior post Jennifer Heil (Sylvania/Southview) each hit a free throw in the final minute as the Bishops nipped Wooster in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Wooster's Molly Rallo had tied the game at 61-61 with a pair of free throws with 1:38 to play.

Brizendine then sank a lay-in off a Jennifer Heil pass with 1:23 to put the Bishops ahead, 63-61. The Bishops got the ball back after a Wooster turnover with 1:00 to play and worked the clock until Kelly Heil was fouled with :37.6 to play.

Kelly Heil hit the second of her 2 free throws, but Wooster turned the ball over on the inbounds play, and Jennifer
Heil was fouled on Ohio Wesleyan's ensuing inbounds pass. Jennifer Heil then hit the first of her 2 free throws for a 65-61 lead with :36.1 on the clock.

Wooster's Kristen Rice missed a shot with :15 to play, but the ball went out of bounds off a Bishop player and the Fighting Scots had another chance. Jen Flavin missed with :05 left and Jennifer Heil snagged the rebound to seal the game.

Wooster used an 11-0 run to open up an early 13-4 lead less than 5 minutes into the game. Ohio Wesleyan responded with a 14-5 burst, with Kelly Heil scoring 10 points and sophomore post Shelby Larson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) adding the other 4, to tie the game at 18-18 with 10:33 left in the first half.

From there, neither team led by more than 1 point until the Bishops took a 34-30 lead late in the first half. Wooster's Lindsey Schaaff came back with a 3-pointer in the closing seconds for a 34-33 halftime score.

Wooster threatened to run off with the game again in the second half, at one stretch holding the Bishops to 1 basket over a span of 5 minutes as the Fighting Scots turned a 44-41 deficit into a 55-48 lead with 9:10 remaining. Schaaff was the big gun for Wooster, drilling back-to-back 3-pointers and adding a pair of free throws.

But the Battling Bishops bounced back once more, with senior post Mindy Hammond (Columbus/DeSales) scoring 5 points and Brizendine putting back a missed free throw and adding another free throw for a 57-55 Bishop lead with 6:04 remaining.

Wooster came back to tie the game 3 times before Brizendine's bucket put the Bishops ahead to stay.

Kelly Heil led the Bishops with 21 points, while Brizendine finished with 13 points and Hammond had 10 points and a team-leading 4 assists. Jennifer Heil led the Bishops with 6 rebounds.

Schaaff led the Fighting Scots with 14 points, while Rice scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds and Natalie Barone finished with 10 points.
