Ohio Wesleyan 61, Oberlin 57

Junior guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta) scored to put the Bishops ahead to stay and sophomore wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) and junior post Tiffany Barbee (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical) each scored 5 points down the stretch as the Bishops held on to defeat Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan had trailed for the first 27 minutes of play before Heil tied the game at 45-45 with a pair of free throws with 12:59 left in regulation time. Oberlin's Sonja Spencer followed with a free throw with 12:45 left, but Sensabaugh scored on a fast break after the made free throw to give Ohio Wesleyan the lead for good. Heil followed with a 3-point play to hike the Bishop lead to 50-46 with 11:07 remaining.


Oberlin closed to within 52-51 on Malisha Richardson's 3-point play with 8:08 to play, but the Bishops responded with a 6-0 run that featured a pair of buckets by senior post Mindy Hammond (Columbus/DeSales) and a Barbee lay-in off a Hammond assist.

Barbee later hit a free throw to give the Bishops a 61-56 lead with 1:56 to play, but Oberlin got that point back when Nicole Burford sank a free throw with 1:42 left.

Oberlin got the ball back, but Cristina Briboneria's 3-point shot circled the rim and came out with just over a minute to play. Ohio Wesleyan was able to work the clock down to :08 when Hammond was fouled. Hammond missed the front end of the one-and-one, but Spencer misfired on a 3-point attempt from the left corner in the closing seconds.

The Yeowomen jumped on top early, with Richardson scoring on the opening possession of the game, then used a 9-0 run to build a 17-15 lead into a 26-15 cushion with 8:30 left in the first half. The Bishops closed to within 31-25 at halftime, but Oberlin bounced back to take a 38-27 lead with 18:25 left in the game before Ohio Wesleyan rallied.

Heil led the Bishops with 24 points and 7 steals, while Hammond finished with 15 points and led the Bishops with 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Barbee finished with 13 points.

Richardson led the Yeowomen with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Briboneria scored 13 points and Spencer finished with 10 points.
