Ohio
Wesleyan 70, Denison 65
Jan.
15, 2003
Sophomore wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) converted a
3-point play with 1:53 left in regulation time to break a 63-63 tie and
put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay in North Coast Athletic Conference action
on Wednesday in Granville.
Denison's Danielle Spring had tied the game at 63-63 with a pair of free
throws as the Big Red erased an 11-point second-half deficit.
But Heil's 3-point play gave the Bishops the lead once again, and after
a Denison miss, sophomore post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) scored to
give Ohio Wesleyan a 68-63 lead with 1:05 to play.
Spring sank 2 more free throws with :54 left, but Denison would not score
again.
Both teams started slowly, with Denison taking its first lead of the game
on Spring's lay-in that made it 5-4, Denison, with 14:13 left in the first
half.
Ohio Wesleyan answered with an 8-0 run, with senior post Mindy Hammond
(Columbus/DeSales) converting a 3-point play, junior guard Krystal Sensabaugh
(Wapakoneta) knocking down a 3-pointer and Brizendine scoring from the
paint for a 12-5 Bishop lead.
The Bishops never trailed again, though Denison did rally to tie the game
at 24-24 before Heil's jumper in the waning seconds of the half gave Ohio
Wesleyan a 26-24 halftime lead.
Ohio Wesleyan led, 35-33, with just over 15 minutes left in the game when
Brizendine converted a 3-point play to kick off an 11-2 run. Heil scored
6 points and junior post Tiffany Barbee (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical)
added a basket during that spurt.
Denison came back to tie the game at 55-55 on Meghan Overom's 3-point
play with 5:31 to play, and the game was tied twice more before Ohio Wesleyan
took the lead for good.
Brizendine
led the Bishops with 22 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Heil finished with
19 points and Hammond scored 15 points and led the Bishops with 8 boards.
Overom led the Big Red with 12 points, while Spring scored 11 points and
Jessica McConnell finished with 10 points.
