Ohio
Wesleyan 70, Allegheny 60
Jan.
18, 2003
Sophomore
post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) hit back-to-back lay-ups to put Ohio
Wesleyan ahead to stay and sophomore wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview)
scored 7 points to highlight a 17-4 second-half run that broke open a
North Coast Athletic Conference win over Allegheny on Saturday at Branch
Rickey Arena.
The Bishops started the game ice-cold, getting a transition lay-in from
Brizendine to tie the game at 2-2 but then going over 6 minutes without
a basket.
Allegheny broke the 2-2 tie with an 11-0 run and still led, 24-14, with
6:17 left in the first half when power was lost in the campus area.
After a delay, the Bishops chipped away at the Gator lead, getting a pair
of baskets from Heil and a 3-pointer by Brizendine as the shot clock was
running down. Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 33-30 on Heil's fast break
lay-in with :17 left in the half but saw the Gators steal the momentum
when Beth Van Parys dropped a follow shot into the bucket at the buzzer
for a 35-30 Gator lead.
The Gators held on to the lead through the early second half, and still
were on top by a 46-43 margin on a fast break by Meredith McDonough with
12:33 remaining.
Ohio Wesleyan then went on a 10-2 tear, with sophomore post Shelby Larson
(Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) draining a jumper from the circle
before Brizendine's consecutive scores gave the Bishops the lead for good.
Raelynn Miles scored to bring the Gators within 49-48, but free throws
by senior post Mindy Hammond (Columbus/DeSales) and Brizendine and a Kelly
Heil steal and lay-in pushed the lead back to 53-48 with 9:05 left in
the game.
Allegheny called a time out just before a second blackout hit the campus,
and after play resumed, Valery Medwid hit a pair of free throws to cut
the deficit to 53-50.
But Kelly Heil scored 5 of the Bishops' next 7 points and senior post
Jennifer Heil (Sylvania/Southview) added a lay-in as Ohio Wesleyan stretched
the lead to 60-50.
The Gators rallied to within 62-58 on a Courtney Steding lay-in with 3:30
left, but Ohio Wesleyan sealed the game at the line, going 8-for-12 from
the stripe in the remaining time.
Kelly
Heil led the Bishops with 27 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Brizendine
finished with 19 points and led the Bishops with 8 rebounds. Hammond added
10 points and 4 assists. Junior guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta)
led the Bishops with 6 assists.
Steding led the Gators with 16 points and 9 rebounds, while Van Parys
scored 12 points and McDonough finished with 10 points.
