Ohio Wesleyan 60, Earlham 49

Jan. 25, 2003

Junior post Tiffany Barbee (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical) and sophomore post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) each scored 4 points down the stretch as Ohio Wesleyan scored the game's final 9 points in taking a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Earlham on Saturday in Richmond, Ind.

With the Bishops clinging to a 51-49 lead with 1:30 left in regulation time, Brizendine started the game-ending run with a jumper with 1:12 on the clock. Earlham's Melissa Liffick missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Barbee was fouled on the Bishops' ensuing possession. She drained both free throws to hike the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 55-49 with :44 to play.

After Earlham missed a lay-up, sophomore wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) made 1 of 3 free throws to give Ohio Wesleyan a 6-point lead, and after the Quakers misfired on a 3-point shot on their next possession, Barbee added 2 more free throws. Brizendine sank 2 free throws with :01 on the clock to account for the final margin.

The 11-point final margin did not reflect the play of the game's first 38 minutes. The biggest lead in the first half was 4 points by Ohio Wesleyan, although Earlham led by 3 on a few occasions
. The half ended with the Bishops holding a 28-25 advantage.

The second half was a carbon copy of the first. Each team had a 3-point lead during the second half but neither was able to go beyond that until Heil hit a 3-pointer with 3:33 left to play in regulation time that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 50-45 lead, the largest margin of the game to that point.

Earlham came back with baskets by Liffick and Sabrina Bruner to slice the deficit to 51-49 but did not score again.

Brizendine
led the Bishops with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Heil finished with 14 points and senior post Mindy Hammond (Columbus/DeSales) added 10 points.

Kim Patton led the Quakers with 12 points and Rae-Rae Washington added 10 points. Lindsey Chappell led all players with 12 rebounds.
