Ohio Wesleyan 74, Wooster 72

Jan. 29, 2003

Sophomore post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) hit a tie-breaking basket with :04 to play and stole the ball just before the final buzzer to seal a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wooster on Wednesday at Wooster.

Wooster had broken a 69-69 tie with a pair of Natalie Barone free throws with 1:33 to play, but the Bishops took the lead when junior guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta) drilled a 3-pointer with 1:15 on the clock, putting Ohio Wesleyan ahead, 72-71.

Barone had a chance to give the Fighting Scots the lead but she missed the second of 2 free throws with :22 to play, leaving the game tied at 72-72.

The Bishops worked the clock down until senior post Mindy Hammond (Columbus/DeSales) found Brizendine for the go-ahead lay-in.

After a Wooster time out and an Ohio Wesleyan time out, Brizendine stole the ball from Alexis Louttit in the final seconds to seal the win.

Wooster had led by as many as 19 points during the first half. The Scots broke a 4-4 tie with a 19-4 burst that saw Barone and Lindsey Schaaff each hit a pair of 3-pointers. The Scots did not allow Ohio Wesleyan to come closer than 13 points during the final 10 minutes of the first half and took a 43-27 lead into the locker room.

The Fighting Scots still led by a margin of 54-42 nearly 7 minutes into the second half before Ohio Wesleyan erupted with a 17-2 outburst to take the lead. Hammond had a free throw and a lay-in, then Brizendine scored 2 straight baskets to slice the margin to 4 points. Wooster answered with a pair of Courtney Davison free throws to hike the lead back to 56-50 with 9:03 to play, but sophomore wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) buried a 3-pointer and Sensabaugh and Hammond each sank a pair of free throws to give Ohio Wesleyan a 57-56 lead, then junior post Tiffany Barbee (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical) added a lay-in for a 59-56 Bishop lead.

Wooster regrouped with a 3-pointer by Schaaff that tied the game at 59-59 with 6:35 to play and ended a span of nearly 8 minutes without a basket.

Both teams took and lost 4-point leads down the stretch. First, the Bishops recorded layups by Barbee and Heil for a 63-59 lead with 5:57 to go, then Wooster followed with a 10-2 run that featured 5 points by Kristen Rice and another Schaaff free throw. Rice's basket with 3:51 remaining gave Wooster a 69-65 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan tied the game with a pair of Heil free throws and a Barbee lay-in, setting up the dramatic final 2 minutes.

Heil
led the Bishops with 21 points, while Hammond finished with 19 points and a team-high 7 assists. Brizendine scored 14 points and led the Bishops with 9 rebounds.

Barone stood out for Wooster with 16 points, 8 assists and 6 steals. Schaaff followed with 15 points, all coming from long distance. Rice added 13 points and Louttit scored 10 points and led the Scots with 9 rebounds.
