Central State 69, Ohio Wesleyan 54

Teaira Harrison and Chovonne Harris fueled 3 different scoring runs that sparked Central State to a non-conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Bishops jumped ahead in the early going, taking an early 7-4 lead on the first career 3-point shot by senior post Jennifer Heil (Sylvania/Southview), a drive by senior post Mindy Hammond (Columbus/DeSales) and a putback by junior post Tiffany Barbee (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical).

Ohio Wesleyan extended its lead to 17-10, with sophomore wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) and sophomore post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) each scoring 4 points during that 10-6 run.

Harrison and Harris then combined to score the next 12 points, with Harrison hitting 2 free throws before Harris followed with a 3-point play, a jumper from the free throw line and a drive along the left baseline. Harrison followed with a 3-point play that gave the Lady Marauders a 22-17 lead with 6:32 left in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan came back to tie the game at 22-22 as Brizendine scored from the lane and Kelly Heil drained a 3-pointer, but the Marauders took the lead on a lay-in by Yolanda Cotton before Harris sank back-to-back 3-pointers in the closing minutes of the first half. Harrison had a free throw with 1:01 to play that made the halftime score 33-26 in favor of Central State.

Brizendine and Kelly Heil scored consecutive baskets early in the second half to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 40-34, but Harrison hit 2 straight baskets to start off a 10-2 Marauder run, and later in the half drilled a pair of 3-pointers during another 10-2 burst that sealed the win.

Kelly Heil led the Bishops with 25 points, while Brizendine finished with 14 points and a team-high 8 rebounds. Hammond led the Bishops with 5 assists.

Harrison led Central State with 21 points and 7 rebounds, while Harris added 20 points. Kelly Adams had 10 points and a team-high 6 assists and Cotton also scored 10 points.
