Denison 79, Ohio Wesleyan 61

Feb. 19, 2003

[ Kelly Heil ]Denison torched the nets for 46 first-half points and did not allow the Bishops to come closer than 14 points during the second half in defeating Ohio Wesleyan in
North Coast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Highlighting the game for the Battling Bishops was sophomore wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview). Heil led the Bishops with 21 points, raising her career total to 1012. Heil is the ninth Ohio Wesleyan female to surpass the 1000-point mark and the first to do it as a sophomore.

Meghan Overom led the way as Denison jumped to an early lead. Overom scored 9 of the Big Red's first 12 points as Denison opened the game with a 12-3 run, then added a pair of 3-pointers and a steal and fast break lay-in during a 10-0 spurt that gave the Big Red a 32-12 lead with 6:50 left in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan clawed back behind Heil and junior post Tiffany Barbee (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical). With the Bishops trailing, 37-15, Barbee converted a traditional 3-point play before Heil hit a 3-pointer. After a lay-in by sophomore post Erica Brizendine (Grove City), Barbee buried 4 straight free throws to bring the Bishops within 39-27 with 2:25 left in the first half.

But the Big Red answered with a pair of free throws by Jessica McConnell and a 3-pointer by Catherine Mohn for a 44-27 lead, and after the teams traded points, the first half ended with Denison holding a 46-29 edge. During the first half, the Big Red shot 57 percent from the field (16 of 28), including 88 percent from 3-point range (7 of 8).

Ohio Wesleyan assembled a run early in the second half, with Barbee scoring twice and Heil adding 3 points to help the Bishops close within 56-40 with 11:29 to go, but McConnell sank a 3-pointer to help the Big Red repelled the threat.

The Bishops then held Denison to only one basket for nearly 7 minutes of play, but despite the scoring of Heil and Brizendine, were not able to come closer than 67-53 with 5:55 remaining.

Heil led the Bishops with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists, while Barbee finished with 20 points.

Overom led all players with 32 points. McConnell added 12 points and a team-high 3 assists and Ann Staubach led the Big Red with 6 rebounds.
