Sophomore wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) and senior post Mindy Hammond (Columbus/DeSales) took over down the stretch to lead Ohio Wesleyan past Kenyon in quarterfinal action of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The second-seeded Bishops advance to the tournament semifinals on Friday in Springfield, where they will face third-seeded Denison.

With the score tied at 41-41 with less than 3 minutes to play, Heil hit the first of 2 free throws to give the Bishops the lead for good. Heil missed the second free throw but followed the shot, grabbed the ball and called time out as she was sailing out of bounds to retain possession for Ohio Wesleyan.

On the ensuing inbounds play, the ball went to Hammond, who hit a jumper from the lane and was fouled. Hammond converted the 3-point play to give the Bishops a 45-41 lead with 2:30 remaining.

Kenyon closed to within 45-43 on a drive by Krissy Zatroch with 2:16 to play.

After each team came up fruitless on a possession, the Bishops had the ball and called time out with 1:05 to play. The play went to Heil, who drilled a 3-pointer from the left wing with :59 remaining, hiking the Bishop lead to 48-43.

Alison Lebar converted a follow shot to close the gap to 48-45 with :36 left, but Hammond hit a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to provide the final margin.

The first half of the game featured 9 lead changes and 4 ties and was tied at 20-20 in the closing minutes before Lebar and Lindsay Madaras scored to give the Ladies a 24-20 halftime advantage.

Ohio Wesleyan opened the second half with a burst, with Heil erupting for 2 baskets and sophomore post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) another for a 26-24 Bishop lead.

Madaras scored to break Kenyon's scoreless string at 4:10, evening the game at 26-26, and the teams continued to slug it out. Ohio Wesleyan moved to a 36-32 lead, with Heil driving for a score with 8:06 left, but Kenyon swiftly responded with a 7-1 burst that saw baskets by Katy Zeanah and Madaras sandwiched around a Beth Halicki 3-pointer.

Madaras' basket gave the Ladies a 39-37 lead with 6:36 remaining, which the Bishops erased on a pair of Brizendine free throws. Lebar and senior post Jennifer Heil (Sylvania/Southview) traded baskets to leave the score tied at 41-41, setting up the nailbiting conclusion.

Heil led the Bishops with 17 points, while Brizendine finished with 9 points and a team-high 8 rebounds. Junior guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta) led the Bishops with 2 assists.

Madaras led the Ladies with 10 points and 2 assists. Lauren Camp had a team-high 8 rebounds
