Case Reserve 80, Ohio Wesleyan 69

Nov. 26, 2002

Amber Hammell and G'Ann Lauder each scored 5 points as Case Reserve took the lead with a 20-2 first-half run and held off an Ohio Wesleyan comeback to take a non-conference win in Ohio Wesleyan's home opener on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan appeared to be pulling away midway through the first half behind the scoring of sophomore wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) and sophomore post Erica Brizendine (Grove City). Heil scored 6 points and Brizendine added 5 points during a 17-7 run that turned a 7-4 deficit into a 21-14 Bishop lead with 9:46 left in the first half.

But Ohio Wesleyan went cold from the field, getting just one basket during the next 7-plus minutes as the Spartans assembled their run. Hammell started it off with a 10-foot jumper and added a 3-pointer that got a shooter's roll and fell in to pull CWRU within 21-20 with 8:04 left in the half. Rachel Spadafore put Case Reserve ahead to stay with a jumper from the lane with 7:23 on the clock, and on the Bishops' next possession, Keesha Allen stole the ball and went for a lay-in to add to the Spartan lead.

After another basket by Spadafore and 2 free throws by Allen, Brizendine stopped the bleeding with a basket on a fast break, but CWRU got a putback basket and a 3-pointer from Lauder to stretch the lead to 34-23 with 4:31 left in the half.

Trailing, 39-25, with less than 3 minutes left in the half, the Bishops started a comeback, getting a follow shot by junior post Tiffany Barbee (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical), a lay-in from senior post Jennifer Heil (Sylvania/Southview) and a 3-pointer and 2 free throws from Kelly Heil to cut the gap to 39-34 with :18 left on the clock, but the Spartans stole the momentum when Jasmine Rowan threw in an 18-footer from the left corner with :08 left in the half.

Ohio Wesleyan put together a run in the second half, holding the Spartans to only one basket during the final 7 minutes, but the Bishops were not able to come closer than 11 points.

Kelly Heil led the Bishops with 21 points, Brizendine finished with 15 points and Barbee added 12 points. Junior post Kristin Thompson (Logan), Barbee and Kelly Heil shared the team lead with 5 rebounds and j
unior point guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta) had a team-high 8 assists.

Lauder led the Spartans with 18 points and shared the team lead with 9 rebounds, followed by Allen with 15 points and team bests of 9 rebounds and 7 assists, Angie Zeuch with 13 points, and Andrea Haylett with 12 points.
