Ohio Wesleyan 66, Thomas More 51

Dec. 31, 2002

Sophomore wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) scored 5 points and sophomore post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) added 4 points as the Bishops opened the second half with an 11-0 run to break open a close game and take a non-conference win over Thomas More on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan started the game ice-cold, missing its first 6 shots and turning the ball over 6 times, but Thomas More could not take advantage of the Bishop drought, scoring only twice in the first 6-plus minutes of action.

Heil jump-started the Bishop offense with a 3-pointer and then added a steal and lay-in to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 8-7 with 12:18 left in the first half. After Carrie Clift scored to give the Saints a 10-7 lead, Heil had 2 baskets to fuel a 7-0 burst that gave the lead back to the Bishops.

Thomas More got 3-pointers from Amanda Hoffman and Nicole Stein to highlight an 11-5 run that gave the Saints a 21-19 lead with 2:57 left in the first half, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with 7 straight points, with senior post Jennifer Heil (Sylvania/Southview) sinking a lay-in, Kelly Heil draining 3 free throws and Brizendine converting a fast break lay-in.

Clift hit a lay-in and Denise Beam sank a potential game-tying jumper with :06 left in the half, but her toes were on the 3-point line at the release of the shot and the half ended with the Bishops holding a 26-25 lead.

Kelly Heil then scored right off the inbounds pass to open the second half, then Brizendine hit 2 straight lay-ins and senior post Mindy Hammond (Columbus/DeSales) drove the right baseline for a bucket before Kelly Heil ended the 11-0 run with a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 16:13 to play.

The Saints tried to come back, with leading scorer Holly Roberts getting her first points of the game on a drive in the lane and Joanna Bess following with a free throw, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with a 7-0 run and held the Saints to only one basket over the next 8 minutes to pull away.

Kelly Heil led the Bishops with 30 points, while Brizendine added 13
points, led the Bishops with 3 assists and shared the team lead with 7 rebounds. Junior post Tiffany Barbee (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical) also shared the team lead with 7 rebounds.

Roberts led the Saints with 12 points, while Beam finished with 10 points. Clift grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds and Ashley Will led the Saints with 2 assists.
