Rio Grande 5, Ohio Wesleyan 3

Kris Schuler clubbed a 3-run double to cap a 4-run seventh inning that lifted Rio Grande over Ohio Wesleyan in the Bishops' season opener on Sunday at Rio Grande.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when freshman third baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) singled home sophomore outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland), then took a 2-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by senior outfielder Byron Lowe (Medford, Mass./Cambridge Ridge).

Rio Grande closed to within 2-1 in the fourth when Charlie Kabealo scored on Sherman's error, but the Bishops got the run back in the seventh as Sherman was hit by a pitch and Lowe and senior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) singled.

The Redmen got one run in the bottom of the inning on doubles by Brent Ewing and Scott Peterman, then loaded the bases with one out against sophomore righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman). Krieger struck out H.A. Scott, but Schuler's double cleared the bases and put Rio Grande ahead, 5-3.

Ohio Wesleyan challenged in the ninth, loading the bases against Kevin Hale, but Hale struck out senior Andy Busch (Westerville/South) to end the game.

Sherman had 3 hits to lead the Bishop offense, while Lowe added 2 hits and Toney scored twice. Krieger was charged with the loss.
