Mike
Mooney threw a no-hitter and Jarrod Klausman drove in 2 runs to lift Marietta
over Ohio Wesleyan in the Bishops' home opener on Saturday at Littick
Field.
Marietta jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Chris Sidick led
off with a walk, stole second, took third on a sacrifice by Andy Coble
and scored on Klausman's sacrifice fly.
The Bishops threatened in the bottom of the inning, with senior outfielder
Mike Albert (Shelby) reaching base after a wild pitch on a third strike.
Albert moved to second on another wild pitch and took third on a ground
out by senior righthander Tyler Mott (Grove City), but was stranded there.
Coble hit a solo homer in the third and scored in the fifth when he doubled,
moved to third on a sacrifice by Klausman and scored on Derek Litke's
double.
Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the bottom of the fifth when freshman first
baseman Tom Bottichio (Mason) reached on an error, took second on a sacrifice
by senior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) and reached third
on a passed ball. Senior shortstop Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan
Alder) walked to put runners at the corners, but the Bishop threat ended
there.
Marietta added runs on Ryan Eschbaugh's RBI
single in the eighth and Klausman's RBI single in the ninth.
Mooney faced 4 batters over the minimum. He struck out 6 and walked 2.
Mott was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan. He struck
out 7 and walked 3 in 5.2 innings, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs, all earned.
Burchett finished up on the hill, allowing 2 runs during the final 3.1
innings.
